Job Title: Estimator - Electrical Contractor (Power Utility Projects)
Position Summary

Responsible for preparing accurate, competitive cost estimates for power utility and electrical infrastructure projects. Scope includes transmission, distribution, and substation work. Role supports bid strategy, pricing, risk evaluation, and turnover to operations. Field construction experience is valued and directly applicable.
Core Responsibilities
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for power utility projects, including transmission lines, substations, and related civil/electrical scopes.
  • Review drawings, specifications, utility standards, and contract documents to define full project scope.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for electrical, structural, and civil components.
  • Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor pricing.
  • Develop labor, equipment, material, and indirect cost breakdowns.
  • Identify constructability issues, scope gaps, and risk items during bid phase.
  • Support bid reviews, value engineering, and pricing strategies.
  • Coordinate with project management, engineering, and field leadership during bid handoff.
  • Maintain historical cost data and contribute to estimating databases.

Experience Backgrounds Welcomed
Candidates with hands-on experience in any of the following are strongly encouraged:
  • Foundations
  • Drilled piers
  • Caissons
  • Above-grade substations
  • Transmission line construction
    Field experience in these areas is considered directly relevant to this estimating role.
Qualifications
  • Experience in estimating or construction related to electrical or power utility projects.
  • Ability to interpret utility drawings, specifications, and construction standards.
  • Strong understanding of labor productivity, equipment usage, and construction sequencing.
  • Proficiency with estimating software and spreadsheets.
  • Detail-oriented with disciplined documentation practices.
  • Ability to manage multiple bids under deadline pressure.
Preferred Experience
  • Electrical contractor or utility contractor background.
  • Knowledge of utility owner standards and procurement processes.
  • Experience estimating self-performed electrical or civil work.
Work Environment
  • Office-based estimating with periodic coordination with field teams.
  • Fast-paced bid schedules tied to utility procurement cycles.
