Field Controls & Automation Engineer

Position Overview

This role supports field operations by maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving control systems across hardware, software, and network environments. The engineer will execute automation projects, enhance equipment reliability, resolve control-related issues, and serve as a technical resource for operations and maintenance teams. Responsibilities include programming, diagnostic work, documentation, and supporting new technology deployments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot and repair electrical, controls, and communication issues during rig-up and daily operations.
  • Work with PLCs, VFDs, controllers, networks, and automation software.
  • Program PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, switches, routers, and instrumentation.
  • Support and execute field automation projects across all control platforms.
  • Train operators on new systems and technology.
  • Collaborate with technicians, electrical supervisors, and digital/technical teams during equipment startup.
  • Maintain and support control systems for pumps, blenders, power generation, and gas-conditioning equipment.
  • Serve as point of contact for third‑party automation integrators and technology vendors.
  • Provide on-call support for urgent controls/automation issues.
  • Adhere to all safety programs, documentation requirements, and regulatory standards.
  • Perform additional duties needed to support operational continuity.

Requirements

  • 1-5 years of experience in automation, controls, or electrical systems (5+ preferred).
  • Degree in Electrical, Controls, or Automation Technology (required).
  • Ability to read electrical, controls, and network schematics.
  • Knowledge of equipment control logic.
  • Preferred experience:
    • Drilling or Fracturing
    • Siemens S7 platforms
    • Oilfield field service operations
  • Valid U.S. driver's license; must pass background and drug screening.
  • Overtime and reliable in‑person attendance required.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of fracturing equipment and communication systems (pumps, blenders, power generation).
  • High proficiency with multimeters and electrical diagnostic tools.
  • Strong knowledge of control systems, automation hardware/software, PLC programming (including SCL), and networking.
  • Ability to interpret P&IDs, PFDs, and technical design documents.
  • Strong electrical, mechanical, and mathematical aptitude.
  • Ability to manage multiple automation projects simultaneously.
  • Strong teamwork, communication, and stakeholder‑management skills.
  • Ability to lead safety discussions and follow all safety procedures.
  • Adaptability in fast‑paced environments with shifting operational needs.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to complete all required onboarding and recurring safety training.
