Geotechnical Project Manager/Director

Geotechnical Project Manager/Director - Indianapolis

About the Opportunity

We are representing a well-established, highly reputable, family-owned engineering consultancy with a strong Midwest presence and decades of success delivering geotechnical and construction services. The firm is experiencing continued growth within its geotechnical group, which is now its largest and fastest-growing discipline, and is seeking a senior-level leader to help shape its next phase.

This role can be positioned at Senior Project Manager or Director level, depending on experience. It offers a rare opportunity to combine technical excellence, project leadership, and strategic influence within a flexible, people-first culture.

Role Overview

This position plays a critical role in leading geotechnical projects and teams while remaining technically engaged. Due to the collaborative size of the organization, senior leaders are expected to stay hands-on while also helping guide team growth, client relationships, and operational strategy.

Depending on seniority, responsibilities may lean more heavily toward either project execution or broader group leadership-but this is not a hybrid expectation. The firm is open to hiring the right-level individual and aligning scope accordingly.

Key Responsibilities

Senior Project Manager Level

  • Lead geotechnical projects from proposal through delivery, ensuring quality, schedule, and budget performance
  • Serve as a technical resource on a wide range of geotechnical engineering assignments
  • Mentor junior engineers and project staff, fostering technical and professional development
  • Support business development efforts through client interaction and proposal input
  • Take on increasing leadership responsibility as the geotechnical group continues to expand

Director Level (if applicable)

  • Provide strategic oversight and leadership for geotechnical teams and operations
  • Drive growth initiatives, resource planning, and technical direction of the group
  • Strengthen key client relationships and represent the firm in the market
  • Partner with executive leadership on long-term business planning
  • Maintain involvement in select technical and client-facing work

Projects & Market Focus

  • Strong, ongoing workload with state transportation agencies, including significant DOT programs
  • Mix of large, long-term infrastructure projects and smaller geotechnical and vertical construction assignments
  • Work includes subsurface investigations, drilling coordination, laboratory testing integration, and engineering analysis

What We're Looking For

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license - required
  • 8+ years of geotechnical engineering experience
  • Proven project management and leadership capability
  • Strong technical foundation with the ability to remain hands-on
  • Experience working with transportation or public-sector clients strongly preferred
  • Ability to mentor teams and contribute positively to a collaborative culture

Location & Work Environment

  • Primary preference: Indiana
  • Additional consideration: Central Ohio
  • Flexible working model with hybrid options (typically 1-2 days remote)
  • Family-oriented culture that supports flexible hours and work-life balance

Compensation & Rewards

  • Competitive base salary aligned to seniority and experience
  • Multiple bonus pools available, with total compensation significantly exceeding base
  • No rigid compensation bands-offers are tailored to the individual
  • Long-term growth and leadership opportunities within a stable, privately owned firm

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Join a firm with a long-standing reputation and deep regional roots
  • Work within a family-owned, people-first culture where leadership is accessible
  • Real opportunity to shape and grow an expanding geotechnical group
  • Balance of autonomy, flexibility, and professional challenge

If you are a senior geotechnical professional looking for a leadership role with real influence-without sacrificing technical engagement-this position offers a compelling next step.
