Building Automation System Specialist

Overview:
The Building Automation Technician plays a critical role in ensuring the efficient operation of modern facilities by installing, configuring, and maintaining building automation systems (BAS). These systems integrate HVAC, lighting, security, and energy management to create safe, comfortable, and sustainable environments. The technician is responsible for programming control sequences, diagnosing system issues, and implementing solutions that optimize performance and reduce energy consumption.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Installation & Configuration: Set up BAS hardware and software, including sensors, controllers, and networked devices, ensuring compliance with design specifications and industry standards.
  • System Programming: Develop and modify control logic, schedules, and setpoints to meet operational requirements and energy efficiency goals.
  • Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Perform routine inspections, calibrations, and preventive maintenance. Diagnose and resolve hardware, software, and communication issues promptly to minimise downtime.
  • Integration & Optimisation: Collaborate with engineers, contractors, and facility managers to integrate BAS with other building systems and optimise overall performance.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of system configurations, updates, and service activities. Provide detailed reports and recommendations for improvements.
  • Compliance & Safety: Ensure all work adheres to safety regulations, building codes, and environmental standards.

Qualifications:

  • Associate degree or technical certification in building automation, HVAC controls, electrical systems, or related field.
  • Proficiency in BAS platforms (e.g., Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell) and networking fundamentals.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with energy management systems and sustainability practices.
  • Familiarity with BACnet, Modbus, and other communication protocols.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity principles for BAS networks.

Work Environment:
This role involves working in commercial, industrial, or institutional facilities. Technicians may need to travel between sites, work in mechanical rooms, and occasionally perform tasks during off-hours to minimise operational disruptions.
