Role Overview
The Director of Operations & Maintenance (O&M) reports to the Vice President of Operations and plays a critical role in supporting development, construction, and day-to-day asset management for operating thermal and renewable energy facilities across North America.
This position provides leadership and oversight of third-party O&M contractors managing U.S. generation facilities and serves as the primary liaison between ownership and plant operations teams. The Director ensures safe and reliable operations, contractual compliance, and excellence in health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards. Responsibilities include managing budgets, planning outages, and implementing strategies to optimize operational efficiency. The role focuses on maximizing asset performance and long-term returns through KPI analysis, bench-marking, and best-practice adoption, supported by performance scorecards tracking safety, reliability, efficiency, and cost metrics.
Key Responsibilities
- Define annual performance objectives for plant O&M teams.
- Monitor and analyze plant KPIs; recommend and implement improvements.
- Audit and evaluate plant O&M activities, including HSE compliance.
- Maintain clear communication with ownership, plant teams, and stakeholders.
- Participate in internal reviews to report on current and projected performance of assigned facilities, identifying potential issues impacting operations.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, ISO standards, and foster a strong safety culture.
- Represent ownership in interactions with technology providers, including managing contractual service agreements and warranty claims.
- Collaborate with development teams on structuring O&M agreements and conducting technical reviews of plant equipment.
- Stay current on industry best practices through participation in user groups and professional forums.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical field; 10-15 years of power plant operations or related technical experience, including at least 5 years in O&M leadership.
- Ability to develop financial plans, KPI scorecards, and manage technical and operational resources effectively.
- Strong knowledge of power plant systems, life-cycle analysis, operational requirements, and compliance standards.
- Extensive understanding of power plant operating philosophies, processes, and procedures.
- Proven leadership skills and ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders.
- Organized, systematic approach to technical evaluations and complex tasks, ensuring accuracy and efficiency.
- Technical proficiency with software, hardware, and network systems.
- Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills.
Preferred Experience and Skills
- MBA or business degree with a focus on administration and/or finance.
- Experience in strategic planning, budget management, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Strong commercial acumen with a track record in financial assessment and planning for power plant assets.
- Understanding of project operations, cost measurement, and reporting.
- Prior experience managing and adapting a business for successful growth.
- Preference for candidates with 10-15+ years of O&M experience and additional certifications in power plant leadership.
- Valid U.S. passport and ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 50%.
