Director of Structural Engineering | 200-250K Base

Washington DC / Mid-Atlantic Region

LVI Associates is partnering with a leading structural engineering and construction services firm to appoint a Director of Structural Engineering.

This is a rare opportunity for a licensed Structural Engineer to build and lead an in-house engineering function from the ground up while supporting complex access, scaffolding, hoisting, shoring, and temporary works projects across major commercial and infrastructure markets.

The successful candidate will have the autonomy to establish technical standards, develop engineering processes, build a team, and act as the senior engineering authority for the business. This role offers significant visibility with executive leadership and the opportunity to shape the long-term direction of a growing engineering department.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering & Project Delivery

  • Lead the structural design and review of temporary works systems, including scaffolding, suspended access, hoists, shoring, bracing, and related structures.
  • Prepare and review structural calculations, drawings, specifications, and installation requirements.
  • Evaluate loading conditions, anchorage systems, foundations, tie-ins, erection sequencing, and existing structure interfaces.
  • Provide engineering support throughout estimating, preconstruction, installation, modification, and dismantling phases.
  • Interface directly with contractors, clients, architects, engineers of record, and field teams.
  • Conduct site visits as needed to support project execution and resolve technical challenges.
  • Sign and seal engineering documents where appropriately licensed and qualified.

Build & Lead the Engineering Function

  • Establish engineering workflows, design review procedures, quality control standards, and document management systems.
  • Develop calculation templates, design standards, drawing conventions, and technical libraries.
  • Determine which projects should be executed internally versus outsourced to specialist consultants.
  • Recruit, mentor, and lead future engineers and designers as the department grows.
  • Monitor workload, project turnaround times, and team capacity to support future expansion.

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Serve as the company's senior technical resource for structural and temporary works engineering.
  • Collaborate closely with operations, estimating, project management, and safety teams.
  • Communicate complex engineering concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Drive practical, buildable engineering solutions that improve constructability and reduce project risk.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • 5+ years of structural engineering experience with significant exposure to temporary works, construction access systems, scaffolding, shoring, or related structures.
  • Strong experience producing and reviewing structural calculations and construction drawings.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Previous leadership experience or a demonstrated ability to build and manage engineering teams.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and regional offices as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multiple PE licenses and/or the ability to obtain additional registrations.
  • Experience with suspended access systems, complex scaffolding, high-rise access, temporary support structures, and specialty construction engineering.
  • Background working for a structural engineering consultancy, temporary works engineering firm, specialty contractor, or construction engineering group.
  • Familiarity with structural analysis, CAD, and engineering design software.
  • Experience developing engineering processes and scaling technical teams.

First-Year Objectives

  • Assume ownership of a substantial portion of the engineering workload.
  • Implement robust design review and quality assurance procedures.
  • Develop a strategic plan for staffing, software, licensing, and engineering growth.
  • Build strong relationships with operations and field leadership through responsive, practical engineering support.
  • Establish a scalable framework for a growing in-house engineering department.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary: $200,000 - $250,000+
  • Annual Performance Bonus: 10-15%
