Director, Transmission Engineering
Position Summary
A nationally active engineering organization is seeking a Director of Transmission Engineering to lead a regional transmission line design practice. This senior leadership role is responsible for overseeing technical teams, driving operational excellence, expanding client relationships, and supporting strategic growth initiatives across power transmission projects.
The Director will play a key role in shaping technical standards, developing talent, ensuring regulatory compliance, and collaborating with executive and divisional leadership to grow market presence and service capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day operations of the transmission line design group, including engineers, designers, and supervisory staff
- Manage staffing, workload forecasting, and resource balancing across multiple projects and clients
- Mentor and develop supervisory staff and senior engineers through hands-on leadership and performance management
- Provide guidance on professional and technical communication with internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders
- Drive initiatives to improve efficiency, quality, consistency, and delivery of engineering products
- Evaluate technical performance and support career development for engineering and management staff
- Partner with division leadership to establish and implement policies aligned with best engineering practices
- Support business development efforts, including proposal input, client expansion, and geographic growth
- Collaborate cross-functionally with other departments and engineering groups on company-wide initiatives
- Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing clients while identifying new business opportunities
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil, Structural, or Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in power transmission design, including prior supervisory or management experience
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- Proven experience leading engineering teams with strong resource planning and delegation skills
- Ability to manage multiple complex projects concurrently
- Advanced technical knowledge of overhead and underground transmission systems
- Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards (e.g., NESC, ASCE, IEEE)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)
- Willingness to travel as needed to support clients and project execution
