Practice Area Leader - Environmental
An established engineering and environmental consulting firm is seeking a Practice Area Leader to head its environmental services group in the Greater Charlotte area. This is a senior leadership role combining technical oversight, workload and pipeline management, staff development, and business growth. The right person will set the direction for the practice while staying close enough to the work to guide quality and mentor the team.
Responsibilities
- Lead the environmental practice, setting strategic direction, annual goals, and growth priorities for the group.
- Oversee project delivery from scoping through closeout, holding the team to quality, compliance, and profitability standards.
- Manage workload and pipeline, anticipating staffing and resource needs and balancing utilization against upcoming deadlines.
- Prepare project fees and proposals, and manage contracts and invoicing through the project lifecycle.
- Drive business development, cultivating client relationships and supporting PMs and Operations Managers on client visits and go/no-go decisions.
- Serve as the technical authority for the group, maintaining standards and procedures and advising teams on best practices and regulatory compliance.
- Track regulatory changes and market shifts, translating them into strategy and new service opportunities.
- Mentor and develop staff through training programs, 30/60/90-day onboarding plans, and input into annual performance reviews.
- Participate in hiring decisions and candidate evaluations as the practice scales.
- Represent the practice externally through industry engagement, marketing efforts, and strategic conversations.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field; Master's preferred.
- PE or PG license required.
- 10+ years of environmental consulting experience.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to mentor and develop staff.
- Excellent project management capabilities.
- In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations and compliance.
- Strong communication, presentation, and technical writing skills.
- Valid driver's license; overnight travel required.
