Geospatial & Data Science Lead (Environmental Consulting) - Perth, WA
Geospatial & Data Science Lead (Environmental Consulting) - Perth, WA
Lead the build‑out of a modern geospatial capability that turns field data into decision‑ready insight.
We're hiring a hands‑on technical leader to shape our geospatial/data science vision, deliver complex spatial analytics, and mentor a growing team. You'll partner with botanists, zoologists, ecologists, approvals specialists and project managers to support evidence‑based environmental decisions across resources, land development and infrastructure.
What you'll do
- Own the geospatial strategy: define roadmap, standards, and best practices for GIS, remote sensing and spatial data engineering (from data capture to analysis and visualization).
- Deliver high‑impact projects: build robust spatial workflows for environmental assessments, ecological surveys, impact modelling, rehabilitation/monitoring, constraints & habitat mapping, and approvals support.
- Stand up scalable data pipelines: architect and automate ingestion, QA/QC, geoprocessing and productization (maps, services, web apps, dashboards).
- Advance remote sensing: apply imagery/LiDAR/UAV products, change detection, classification/segmentation and feature extraction to real‑world environmental problems.
- Mentor & uplift the team: coach junior GIS analysts and scientists, review methods/outputs, and foster a culture of curiosity, quality and continuous improvement.
- Engage stakeholders: translate technical insight for non‑technical audiences; collaborate with internal technical leads and clients to scope, design and de‑risk solutions.
- Champion data governance: own spatial metadata, versioning, security, and reproducibility; establish templates and code libraries for repeatable delivery.
Tech you'll work with (mix-and-match-no one has it all)
- GIS & Spatial: ArcGIS Pro/Enterprise/Online, QGIS, PostGIS/Geodatabase, FME, GDAL/OGR
- Programming & DS: Python (geopandas, rasterio, arcpy), SQL; R a plus
- Remote Sensing: Sentinel/Landsat, commercial constellations, UAV/LiDAR; Google Earth Engine desirable
- Visualization & Apps: ArcGIS Experience Builder/Field Maps/Survey123, web maps, dashboards; Power BI/Tableau an advantage
- Platforms: Windows server/ArcGIS Enterprise; exposure to cloud (Azure/AWS) beneficial; Git for version control
What you'll bring
- 8-12+ years in GIS/geospatial/spatial data science with a track record of technical leadership and project delivery.
- Depth in environmental applications (e.g., ecology, biodiversity, rehabilitation monitoring, environmental constraints/approvals) or resources/mining-preferred but not essential.
- Experience building enterprise‑grade geospatial workflows and guiding teams in a consulting or delivery environment.
- Confident communicator who can simplify complexity, influence decisions, and nurture early‑career talent.
- Degree in GIS/Geospatial Science, Environmental Science/Engineering, Ecology, Data Science, or related.
Why this role
- Build from the front: real mandate to establish and grow a geospatial/data science capability, backed by experienced environmental scientists.
- End‑to‑end impact: your work connects field data, laboratory/taxonomy insights and spatial analytics to clear recommendations for clients and regulators.
- Career runway: pathway to Principal/Practice Lead as you scale methods, people and platforms.
- Package: competitive salary + tools of trade; flexible working arrangements can be discussed at interview.
Location: Perth (Osborne Park area) with project work across WA; hybrid options considered.
