Overview
An international climate organisation is establishing its presence in Japan and is seeking a Program Officer to support research, policy advocacy, and campaign initiatives focused on industrial decarbonisation.
The organisation operates across Asia and globally, working with governments, financial institutions, and industry stakeholders to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and low-carbon industrial systems.
This is a unique opportunity to join at an early stage of the Japan entity and play a key role in shaping climate strategy, stakeholder engagement, and policy influence in one of the world's most critical industrial markets.
Role Responsibilities
- Conduct research and analysis on climate policy, industrial emissions, and decarbonisation pathways
- Develop and implement strategies to support low-carbon transitions across key sectors
- Engage with stakeholders across government, industry, finance, and civil society in Japan
- Support policy advocacy and campaign execution to influence climate-related decision-making
- Coordinate and deliver events, workshops, and stakeholder initiatives
- Contribute to fundraising materials, proposals, and project reporting
- Collaborate with regional and global teams to ensure alignment with wider organisational strategy

You will support projects across multiple high-impact areas, including:
- Public Finance (energy transition and fossil fuel financing)
- Industrial Decarbonisation (e.g. Steel)
- Methane Reduction
- Shipping & Energy Systems
- Forestry & Sustainable Supply Chains
Candidate Requirements
- Native-level Japanese (JLPT N1 or equivalent)
- Business-level English proficiency
- Strong interest in climate, energy, sustainability, and policy
- Proven analytical and research capabilities
- Ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholder groups
- Experience working in multicultural, cross-functional environments
- Strong written communication skills (policy, research, or academic writing)
Preferred Background
- 3-10 years' experience in sustainability, policy, consulting, NGOs, or related fields
- Academic or professional background in climate, energy, or environmental sectors
- Experience interacting with government bodies, corporates, or financial institutions
- Exposure to advocacy, campaigns, or public policy development
- Bilingual Japanese and english
