Roadway Engineer

About the Opportunity
We are seeking a Roadway Engineer to join a growing transportation team in North Carolina. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys the technical side of roadway design and wants to remain hands-on with project delivery while working on a variety of NCDOT and local agency transportation projects.
The successful candidate will work alongside an established team of transportation professionals on roadway improvements, widening projects, intersection upgrades, multimodal facilities, and other infrastructure initiatives throughout North Carolina.
Responsibilities
- Develop roadway designs for NCDOT and municipal transportation projects.
- Prepare roadway alignments, profiles, grading plans, cross sections, and construction documents.
- Perform engineering calculations and design analyses.
- Utilize OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation to develop design plans and models.
- Coordinate with project managers, design teams, and agency stakeholders.
- Assist with plan development from preliminary engineering through final design and construction.
- Review project deliverables for quality and compliance with client standards.
- Support project schedules and budgets while maintaining high-quality design standards.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including drainage, structures, traffic, and utility coordination.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering.
- PE License preferred (EIT candidates with relevant roadway experience may be considered).
- Experience working on NCDOT, DOT, or transportation infrastructure projects.
- Strong proficiency with OpenRoads Designer and MicroStation.
- Knowledge of NCDOT design standards, specifications, and procedures.
- Experience preparing roadway plans and construction documents.
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Experience
- Roadway design for state DOT transportation projects.
- Intersection improvements and roadway widening projects.
- Corridor studies and transportation design.
- Utility coordination and permitting.
- Mentor and support junior engineering staff.
