Senior Building Automation Engineer - BAS
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the technical execution and delivery of Building Automation Systems (HVAC controls, controllers, networks, and field devices) from design through commissioning and handover.
- Serve as the senior technical authority on Siemens and/or Reliable BAS platforms; provide oversight and guidance on Tridium/Niagara architectures where applicable.
- Review and validate control strategies, sequences of operation, and system architectures developed by engineering and programming teams.
- Lead and oversee system commissioning, functional testing, and performance verification, ensuring systems meet design intent and client requirements.
- Diagnose and resolve complex BAS, HVAC, and network communication issues (BACnet, LonWorks, Modbus, IP-based systems).
- Coordinate BAS integration with mechanical, electrical, fire/life safety, and IT/networking systems.
- Act as the primary technical liaison with clients, consultants, facility teams, and project managers.
- Provide technical mentorship and escalation support to engineers, programmers, and field technicians.
- Support project teams with technical risk identification, system optimisation, and value engineering.
- Review engineering documentation including control drawings, points lists, sequences, network diagrams, and commissioning plans.
- Ensure all systems comply with codes, standards, safety requirements, and internal quality processes.
- Support long-term system performance through post-install optimisation, troubleshooting, and client advisory services.
Required Experience & Skills
- 7+ years of progressive experience in Building Automation Systems within commercial, healthcare, pharmaceutical, or mission‑critical environments.
- Strong platform expertise with Siemens and/or Reliable BAS.
- Solid working knowledge of Tridium/Niagara architectures (design, integration, and troubleshooting rather than day-to-day programming).
- Proven experience leading commissioning activities and resolving complex system-level issues.
- Deep understanding of HVAC systems, control strategies, and BAS networking concepts.
- Strong troubleshooting capability across DDC systems, controllers, field devices, and IP networks.
- Ability to review, challenge, and improve control designs and sequences produced by others.
- Experience working from and reviewing engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interface confidently with clients and senior stakeholders.
- Strong organisational, documentation, and technical reporting skills.
- Valid driver's licence and ability to travel to job sites around the Chicago area.
Preferred Qualifications
- Niagara N4 Certification
- Experience in regulated environments (GMP, FDA, pharmaceutical manufacturing)
- Strong IT/networking knowledge (IP addressing, switches, VLANs, cybersecurity concepts)
- Prior experience in a lead engineer, senior engineer, or technical authority role
