Senior Commissioning Engineer / Commissioning Project Manager

Location: Evanston, IL

Basic Functions

Under the direction of senior leadership and in collaboration with the project team, this role is responsible for commissioning and retro‑commissioning activities, as well as managing teams of M/E/P/FP engineers on multiple projects. The position includes maintaining day‑to‑day communication with the Client and ensuring high‑quality project execution. This role is intended for an experienced professional with 8-10+ years in the field.


Qualifications

What You Will Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering (or Architectural Engineering with a relevant discipline focus), or equivalent experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) licensure preferred.
  • Demonstrated expert knowledge of codes, standards, materials, system details, and construction techniques.
  • Strong expertise in HVAC sub‑systems and a working knowledge of temperature controls.
  • 8-10+ years of experience in commissioning, retro‑commissioning, or related engineering roles.

Minimum Responsibilities

Technical

  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Oversee preparation of construction checklists, functional test procedures, and commissioning‑related specification sections.
  • Familiarity with General Conditions, Contracts, Supplemental Conditions, and contract documents commonly used in construction.
  • Review shop drawings and material submissions to support development of commissioning documentation.
  • Prepare field observation reports and commissioning issue logs.
  • Produce accurate, well‑written technical correspondence and reports.
  • Evaluate design and documentation for compliance with Owner requirements.
  • Contribute to development and refinement of standard technical procedures and master commissioning documents.

  • Promote high‑quality engineering services and strong client service by addressing questions, resolving concerns, and suggesting improvements based on feedback.
  • Apply industry best practices and sound engineering judgment to develop effective solutions to complex project challenges.
  • Define project scope, objectives, milestones, risks, and responsibilities; efficiently allocate time and resources; and monitor progress to keep projects on track.
  • Build and maintain client relationships and help identify opportunities for new services or project engagements.
  • Develop an understanding of client needs, market trends, competition, and growth opportunities to support organizational goals.
  • Communicate professionally and clearly with clients, vendors, and internal teams, practicing active listening.
  • Identify and support adoption of new concepts, technologies, standards, and procedures while assessing potential risks.
  • Coach and mentor team members by setting clear expectations, recognizing achievements, providing feedback, and supporting continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to a positive and motivated team environment by promoting shared accountability, recognition, and a commitment to high performance.
  • Manage processes and personnel to ensure efficient, effective project delivery.
