Senior Superintendent - Large-Scale Commercial Construction

Role Summary

The Senior Superintendent is responsible for planning, managing, and executing all aspects of large-scale and/or complex construction projects. This role leads field operations, oversees project teams, develops construction sequencing, and ensures projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.

Key Responsibilities (Core)

  • Champion a strong safety culture by promoting an incident-free work environment through leadership, training, and proactive risk management. Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Lead day-to-day field operations, including coordination of subcontractors, staff, and workflow across the project site.
  • Oversee project execution, including safety, quality, scheduling, and compliance for either a full project or a major portion of a larger build.
  • Develop and implement detailed work plans for subcontractors and any self-performed scopes of work.
  • Manage site logistics, including the care, custody, and control of materials, equipment, and the overall jobsite.
  • Facilitate regular project meetings, including daily huddles, weekly trade coordination meetings, and progress meetings with stakeholders.
  • Create, maintain, and adjust project schedules in collaboration with project management leadership.
  • Monitor project costs and productivity, working with project management to maintain financial performance.
  • Communicate effectively with owners, design teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and governing authorities.
  • Maintain organized project documentation, including daily reports, logs, schedules, and inspection records.
  • Evaluate field productivity and make adjustments to improve efficiency and performance.
  • Coordinate procurement, material deliveries, and equipment needs to support project execution.
  • Enforce quality standards through adherence to specifications, inspections, and QA/QC processes.
  • Lead project closeout efforts, including pre-punch, final inspections, and turnover coordination.
  • Participate in project planning activities, including preconstruction and execution strategy development.
  • Help determine field staffing needs and resource allocation.
  • Identify and manage project risks, implementing solutions as needed.
  • Support change management processes, including evaluating schedule and cost impacts.
  • Participate in subcontractor and vendor procurement, including scope reviews and buyout discussions.
  • Ensure compliance with contract terms for both owners and subcontractors.
  • Contribute to team development by mentoring staff and supporting talent growth initiatives.
  • Promote a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team environment.

Additional Responsibilities (Senior-Level)

  • Lead the execution of complex, stand-alone, or multiple concurrent projects.
  • Manage and mentor multiple superintendents and field teams.
  • Drive project performance and results through delegation and leadership.
  • Support broader organizational initiatives and operational strategies.
  • Provide training and guidance to enhance field capabilities and best practices.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, industry partners, and local stakeholders.
  • Contribute to business development efforts by supporting pursuits, presentations, and client engagement.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat business by delivering successful projects and maintaining long-term relationships.
  • Take an active leadership role in project planning, execution strategy, and delivery.
  • Collaborate with internal teams (e.g., operations, preconstruction, logistics) to ensure project success.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong ability to manage complex construction operations with accuracy and efficiency.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lead meetings and present information clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction/project management software.
  • Strong understanding of construction means and methods across multiple trades.
  • Experience managing budgets, schedules, and field productivity.
  • Knowledge of scheduling tools and project tracking systems.
  • Familiarity with Lean construction principles and continuous improvement practices.
  • Strong understanding of field operations, logistics, and labor productivity.
  • Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
  • Experience with site layout, equipment coordination, and safety procedures.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to collaborate across all levels.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred.

Experience

  • 10+ years of experience in commercial construction.
  • 8+ years of field supervision experience.
  • Experience leading large-scale or complex projects preferred.
  • Exposure to Lean construction practices is a plus.
