Site/Civil Engineer - Remote (Michigan based)
A well-established Michigan-based design and engineering consultancy is looking to appoint a Civil Engineer to support a growing portfolio of site development projects across the state.
This is a remote position, but candidates must be based in Michigan and live within a practical distance of one of the firm's Michigan office hubs. The role will suit a civil engineer who enjoys technical site design, agency coordination, and working closely with architects, project managers, contractors and clients from early planning through construction.
The work is focused on civil/site design for community-focused, education, commercial and institutional projects. You will be involved in grading, drainage, utilities, stormwater management, permitting, technical documentation and construction phase support.
The Role
You will be responsible for taking civil site design packages from concept through approvals and into construction support. This includes preparing design plans, technical reports, specifications, calculations and permit documentation, as well as coordinating with local agencies and internal project teams.
The position offers a strong balance of technical design, client-facing coordination and multidisciplinary project involvement. It would be a good fit for someone who wants to remain hands-on technically while continuing to build broader project responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and manage civil/site design plans, including grading, drainage, stormwater management and utility layouts
- Support projects from initial design stages through permitting, approvals and construction administration
- Coordinate with local agencies, municipalities and regulatory bodies to move projects through review and approval
- Produce engineering reports, specifications, calculations and construction documentation
- Work closely with architects, planners, project managers, contractors and other engineering disciplines
- Review submittals, respond to RFIs and provide technical support during construction
- Carry out site visits across Michigan as required during design and construction phases
- Help maintain project schedules, budgets and deliverables in line with client expectations
- Provide technical input and guidance to junior team members where needed
What They Are Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, required
- Professional Engineer license strongly preferred
- Master's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field preferred
- Around 6+ years of civil engineering experience, ideally with a strong site design background
- Strong technical capability across grading, drainage, stormwater, utilities and permitting
- Experience working with local agency reviews and regulatory approval processes
- Proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D
- Exposure to hydrology, hydraulics or stormwater modelling software would be beneficial
- Experience with sustainable site design practices would be advantageous
- Strong communication skills and the ability to coordinate with clients, consultants and public agencies
- Ability to manage multiple priorities within a collaborative project environment
