Solar Design/Project Engineer (Utility-Scale)

Our client is a mid-size team with backing from a larger reputable renewable energy firm with a strong track record delivering large‑scale solar and clean‑energy projects across the U.S. (in addition to a broader coverage of data centers and other infrastructure projects across the US!) They are known for technical excellence, financial stability, and a collaborative culture that empowers engineers to drive meaningful impact in the clean‑energy transition.

We're currently seeking a Solar Design Engineer who comes with previous utility-scale solar PV design experience, to join our growing technical team made of electrical, civil, and mechanical engineers. The successful candidate will support design, engineering, and development activities for solar PV plants ranging from 50 MW to multi hundred MW projects.

For the right/qualified candidate, this position has flexibility to sit 100% remote with travel as needed to our HQ to get facetime with our team as we value collaborative culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce and optimize utility‑scale PV system layouts, including module stringing, array configuration, equipment placement, road/access routing, and grid‑connection points.
  • Run performance simulations (e.g., PVsyst, Helioscope, PlantPredict) and analyze results to support energy estimates.
  • Evaluate site constraints using GIS/topographical data and develop preliminary engineering drawings.
  • Collaborate with development, engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) teams to refine designs and ensure constructability.
  • Prepare and review IFC design packages, coordinate with external consultants, and support permitting requirements.
  • Provide technical input during equipment selection and vendor evaluations.
  • Participate in design reviews and actively improve internal design standards and processes.
  • Support RFI responses, design updates, and issue resolution throughout project development and execution.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, or related Engineering field.
  • 3-7+ years experience in solar engineering, with strong exposure to utility‑scale PV projects.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, PV modeling tools (PVsyst required), and familiarity with NEC codes.
  • Understanding of design standards, project agreements, and permitting requirements for large‑scale renewable energy projects.
  • Experience collaborating with IPPs, EPCs, utilities, and engineering consultants.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work cross‑functionally with technical and non‑technical teams.
  • PE license is a plus but not required.

*Must be based in the US currently with 3+ years of US experience.
