Sr Geotechnical Engineer - Akron
Senior Geotechnical Engineer
Akron, Ohio
This opportunity is with one of the Midwest's most established multidisciplinary engineering and consulting firms. With more than 100 years of engineering history, 900+ professionals across multiple offices, and a project portfolio heavily centered around public infrastructure, the organization has built a reputation for delivering complex transportation, water, public works, and government-funded projects throughout the region. The firm maintains longstanding client relationships, with the majority of its work generated through repeat business, providing engineers with a stable backlog of technically challenging projects and long-term career growth opportunities.
The geotechnical practice plays a critical role within the organization, supporting major bridge, transportation, water resource, dam, levee, municipal, and heavy civil projects. Rather than operating as a standalone service line, geotechnical engineers work closely with civil, structural, environmental, and construction teams, allowing them to influence projects from initial site investigation through design and construction.
This position is ideal for an experienced geotechnical engineer who enjoys solving complex subsurface challenges, leading technically demanding projects, and serving as a trusted advisor to clients, project teams, and junior engineers.
What You'll Be Doing
- Lead geotechnical investigations and engineering analyses for complex infrastructure projects.
- Develop recommendations for shallow and deep foundations, earth retention systems, embankments, dams, levees, and slope stabilization.
- Evaluate subsurface conditions and prepare geotechnical reports, design memorandums, and technical recommendations.
- Perform and review analyses related to slope stability, settlement, seepage, bearing capacity, and earth pressures.
- Support bridge, transportation, dam safety, and heavy civil projects throughout planning, design, and construction.
- Provide technical guidance to project teams and mentor developing engineers.
- Serve as a key point of contact for clients, contractors, and project stakeholders.
- Review technical work, maintain quality standards, and provide engineering leadership on multidisciplinary projects.
- Contribute to proposals, client development efforts, and strategic growth initiatives.
The Type of Engineer Who Excels Here
- Enjoys challenging geotechnical problems rather than repetitive production work.
- Brings sound engineering judgement and is comfortable making decisions on complex projects.
- Wants to be recognized as a technical leader, not just a project manager.
- Values working on infrastructure projects that have a visible impact on communities.
- Enjoys mentoring younger engineers and helping shape technical teams.
- Understands both the engineering and client-facing aspects of consulting.
Desired Background
- 10+ years of geotechnical engineering experience.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- Experience with bridges, dams, levees, embankments, transportation infrastructure, or other heavy civil projects.
- Strong understanding of:
- Deep foundations
- Ground improvement
- Slope stability
- Settlement analysis
- Seepage analysis
- Earth retention systems
- Geotechnical investigations
- Experience supporting public-sector infrastructure projects.

Why Engineers Are Interested in This Opportunity
- Consistent backlog of publicly funded infrastructure projects.
- Opportunity to influence major transportation, water, dam, levee, and public works programs.
- Exposure to multidisciplinary teams and large-scale infrastructure design.
- Strong technical challenges rather than routine production work.
- Clear pathway toward senior technical leadership and practice growth.
- Stability, long-term career development, and a culture built around engineering quality and client relationships.
Ideal for a senior geotechnical engineer who still enjoys engineering, wants to stay close to complex technical work, and is looking for a platform to expand their influence, leadership, and long-term career growth.
