Structural Engineer

A licensed engineer in a managerial position responsible for project success. Leads multiple project teams in planning, coordinating and administering projects through all phases of development. Possesses strong leadership and communication skills, a flexible attitude, the ability to solve problems creatively, and the ability to manage effective client relationships. Demonstrates the organization's values by influencing client service, innovation, and communication.


Responsibilities

  • Manages multiple structural project teams to ensure effective execution of project design, delivery of implementation documents, and construction administration, including post‑occupancy evaluations and lessons learned.
  • Acts as the primary client contact, strengthening relationships by understanding project needs, goals and progress.
  • Communicates effectively on critical project issues throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Oversees development of implementation documents, technical coordination, and integration with other disciplines.
  • Works with project teams to establish design solutions that can be technically executed within project constraints such as budget, schedule, and local codes.
  • Collaborates on all phases of the design process-from kickoff through construction administration. Attends site visits and field reviews as needed.
  • Responsible for detailed code analysis, structural analysis, calculations, and quality of implementation documents. Delegates tasks and holds team members accountable.
  • Reviews engineering work and documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Manages and supervises project team interactions internally and with external project participants.
  • Provides guidance, leadership, and motivation to project teams.
  • Participates in team self‑evaluations to identify and share lessons learned.
  • Appropriately applies products and materials in alignment with industry standards, helping define best practices and quality expectations.
  • Integrates best practices, sustainable design strategies, subject‑matter expertise, and innovative solutions effectively for clients, users, and communities.
  • Travel will be required.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Accredited professional degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural Engineering or related field.
  • Typically 9+ years of experience.
  • Direct, sustained experience in all phases of engineering and construction.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Professional engineering (PE) or structural engineering (SE) licensure required (SE preferred).
  • Sustainable design accreditation preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Advanced - expert‑level knowledge or experience
Intermediate - capable of producing high‑quality work independently
Basic - familiarity with core concepts and elementary tasks

  • Basic understanding of Revit and BIM for producing implementation documents.
  • Intermediate knowledge of project management tools preferred.
  • Intermediate experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Project, Teams, and Excel.
  • Intermediate knowledge of sustainability and integrated design guidelines.
  • Advanced knowledge of integrated building design, engineering systems, and QA/QC processes.
  • Advanced knowledge of building codes, material design standards, and constructability.
  • Intermediate experience managing teams in fast‑paced environments.
  • Intermediate ability to lead multiple project teams with collaborative and diplomatic leadership.
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate problem‑solving ability and use of innovative solutions.
  • Intermediate ability to collaborate effectively in team environments.
  • Intermediate ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Intermediate ability to meet deadlines while maintaining expected quality.

Base Salary Range (Chicago only):

$117k - $146k
