Senior Substation Engineer
The Senior Substation Engineer will work within a multi-discipline team to design efficient and reliable electrical substations. This individual will coordinate design efforts to meet project schedules and ensure successful delivery, while also supporting estimating teams with project proposals and cost development.
In addition to core engineering responsibilities, this role requires regular client interaction and the ability to represent the organization professionally. A strong business mindset and client-facing presence are important.
The position is responsible for delivering design work in accordance with applicable industry codes and internal policies related to safety, environmental standards, and quality assurance/control.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop conceptual designs for complex substation projects
- Perform and review technical studies, analyses, and project scopes
- Prepare specifications for equipment procurement and installation
- Lead and guide engineering teams to align deliverables with project requirements
- Collaborate across disciplines to ensure accurate, high-quality design outputs
- Design substation facilities including layouts, grounding systems, conduit systems, lightning protection, control buildings, lighting, and metering
- Review internal and external designs for compliance and constructability
- Support construction activities through site visits, meetings, and issue resolution
- Maintain complete project documentation including as-builts and closeout packages
- Coordinate with internal teams, suppliers, and contractors to manage quality, schedule, and cost
- Mentor junior engineers and support team development
- Contribute to the development and improvement of design standards
Required Skills:
- Experience with substation design tools (e.g., 3D modeling and design software)
- Familiarity with cable ampacity and grounding analysis tools is a plus
- Strong client-facing and communication skills
- Working knowledge of industry standards (IEEE, ANSI, etc.)
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field)
- Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- Minimum 7+ years of substation design experience
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record
