Substation Foreman

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise field crews on substation construction projects.
  • Plan and coordinate daily work activities to meet project schedules and production goals.
  • Oversee installation of structural steel, foundations, grounding systems, conduit, cable, bus work, and major substation equipment.
  • Direct equipment setting, rigging, excavation, and site construction activities.
  • Conduct daily job briefings, safety meetings, and work planning discussions.
  • Ensure work is completed according to project specifications, quality requirements, and safety standards.
  • Coordinate with project management, site supervision, subcontractors, and utility representatives.
  • Track progress, manpower, materials, and field productivity.
  • Identify and resolve field issues while maintaining schedule commitments.

Required Qualifications

  • Previous experience leading crews on substation, utility, transmission, or power delivery construction projects.
  • Strong knowledge of substation construction methods, including structural, civil, and electrical installation activities.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and work packages.
  • Proven leadership experience managing field personnel and coordinating daily operations.
  • Experience with heavy equipment, excavation, rigging, and equipment installation.
  • Strong commitment to safety, quality, and production.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel extensively.
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Preferred / Bonus Experience

  • OSHA 10, OSHA 30, or equivalent safety certifications.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
  • Experience with transformer installation, grounding systems, relay/control work, and substation upgrades.
  • NCCCO, rigging, signal person, or other construction-related certifications.
  • Experience working in energized utility environments and outage schedules.
  • Ability to mentor and develop craft professionals and emerging leaders.

Travel Expectations

These positions require extensive travel throughout the Southeastern United States. Successful candidates must be comfortable working away from home for extended periods and supporting projects wherever operational needs require. Flexibility and a travel-oriented mindset are essential.

Safety & Leadership Expectations

Foremen and Crew Leads are expected to set the standard for safety and professionalism in the field. This includes promoting a strong safety culture, enforcing established procedures, conducting daily safety discussions, identifying potential hazards, and leading crews by example. These roles play a critical part in maintaining project performance, crew accountability, schedule execution, and quality workmanship.
