Job Description: Traveling Project Manager (Mechanical Construction)

Overview

We are seeking a highly motivated Traveling Project Manager to lead and oversee mechanical construction projects across multiple job sites. This role is ideal for a detail‑oriented leader with strong communication skills and a deep understanding of industrial and commercial mechanical systems. The position requires frequent travel to project locations to ensure successful execution, alignment with client expectations, and adherence to safety, quality, and budgetary standards.


Key Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Execution

  • Oversee all phases of mechanical construction projects, from pre‑planning to closeout.
  • Coordinate project scheduling, manpower allocation, materials procurement, and subcontractor activities.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to required specifications and standards.

Site Management & Field Oversight

  • Travel regularly to active job sites to monitor progress and provide on‑site leadership.
  • Conduct site walkthroughs, safety inspections, and quality control reviews.
  • Resolve field issues promptly in collaboration with foremen, superintendents, and engineering teams.

Client & Stakeholder Communication

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients and project partners.
  • Facilitate coordination meetings, provide progress updates, and manage expectations.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, vendors, and field personnel.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Manage project documentation including schedules, change orders, RFIs, submittals, and cost tracking.
  • Prepare and deliver regular progress reports to internal leadership and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate project records and ensure compliance with industry standards.

Budget & Cost Control

  • Develop and manage project budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting.
  • Identify potential cost impacts and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Review invoices, labor reports, and material expenditures for accuracy.

Safety & Compliance

  • Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all job sites.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, local codes, and company safety policies.
  • Participate in incident investigations and support continuous improvement efforts.

Qualifications

Required

  • 5+ years of experience in project management within mechanical construction, HVAC, piping, or industrial environments.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, fabrication, installation practices, and construction processes.
  • Proven ability to lead field teams and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively (regional or national, depending on project demands).

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience working with BIM, scheduling software, and construction management platforms.
  • PMP or other relevant certifications.
