Director of Landscape Architecture - Environmental Design & Restoration

An established California-based environmental planning and design firm is looking for a Director of Landscape Architecture to lead a collaborative team focused on restoring natural systems and community resilience projects. This leadership role involves overseeing a diverse portfolio of environmental restoration projects across a variety of landscapes and ecosystems.

Role Overview

In this position, you'll lead a multidisciplinary group of professionals-including designers, engineers, ecologists, and hydrologists-on projects that improve the health and function of rivers, wetlands, shorelines, and urban green spaces. You'll also contribute to initiatives that integrate nature with public access, education, and climate adaptation strategies.

The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in environmental restoration design, a passion for mentoring others, and the ability to guide projects from concept through construction and long-term stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Technical Oversight

  • Lead the planning and design of restoration projects involving wetlands, riparian corridors, and river systems.
  • Supervise the development of design documents, including plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
  • Apply ecological knowledge to inform planting, grading, and hydrologic strategies.
  • Support construction implementation through site visits and contractor coordination.

Team Leadership

  • Mentor junior and mid-level staff in design techniques and project delivery.
  • Ensure quality control and adherence to project timelines and budgets.
  • Promote collaboration across disciplines and project teams.

Strategic Development

  • Represent the firm at professional events and conferences.
  • Build and maintain client relationships.
  • Contribute to proposal writing and business development efforts.

Qualifications

  • Licensed Landscape Architect in the U.S., with the ability to obtain California licensure within six months.
  • At least 10 years of experience in environmental restoration and design.
  • Degree in Landscape Architecture from an accredited institution.
  • Strong communication skills and a commitment to connecting people with nature.
  • Familiarity with California's ecological systems and environmental regulations.
  • Experience managing staff and complex projects.
  • Valid driver's license and access to transportation for fieldwork.

Work Location

This role can be based remotely or in a hybrid format within California, with a preference for candidates located near the Bay Area or San Diego. Occasional travel for site visits and team collaboration is expected.

Compensation

The salary range for this position is $155,000 to $186,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
