Estimating Manager - California
Provides corporate estimating support to all districts. Estimating managers are tasked with calculating project and material costs. They collaborate with various teams such as construction crews, purchasing agents, and other managers to ascertain the financial requirements for project completion or material acquisition.
Reports to the Local Regional Vice President and the Vice President of Estimating.
Specific Responsibilities Include but are not Limited to:
- Uphold Core Values in all job activities.
- Oversee estimators and assistant estimators.
- Prepare quantity take-offs.
- Determine initial production rates.
- Interpret engineering drawings and specifications to identify work requirements.
- Review vendor or contractor bids to ensure fairness and reasonableness.
- Coordinate with other managers to meet schedules and complete projects on time.
- Monitor project progress and adjust schedules as necessary.
- Estimate material costs and labor hours needed for project completion.
- Manage a team to ensure efficient and effective work performance.
- Ensure contractors comply with safety standards and local regulations.
- Review finished products for quality assurance.
- Maintain records of all project details and documentation, including contracts, bids, and correspondence.
- Develop initial resource requirements.
- Solicit pricing from material suppliers and subcontractors.
- Establish preliminary project schedules.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications, & Experience:
- A 4-year engineering degree or equivalent technical training and/or related experience is required.
- At least 10 years of experience in estimating, cost control, and/or engineering, with a minimum of 4 years in estimating for similar facility construction.
- Thorough understanding of company procedures, estimating techniques, all engineering disciplines, cost control systems, and accounts.
- Ability to estimate all types of projects/contracts and to coordinate and supervise group efforts is essential.
Physical Demands:
- Effective oral and written communication with vendors, management, and coworkers is essential.
- Regular use of the telephone and email for communication.
- Proficiency in HCSS Heavy Bid and Microsoft Office.
- Extended periods of sitting are common.
- Normal hearing, vision, and speaking abilities are essential for conversations, receiving information, and preparing or inspecting documents.
- Occasionally may need to exert up to 15 pounds of force.
- Good manual dexterity for common office equipment like computers, calculators, copiers, and fax machines.
- Good reasoning ability is necessary to understand and use management reports, memos, and other documents.
- Primarily an office position with occasional site and field project visits, requiring travel to various locations as needed. The following activities are often associated with site visits:
- Standing or walking on project sites for extended periods.
- Wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as earplugs, protective eyewear, gloves, hard hats, steel-toed boots, and high visibility safety apparel.
Work Environment:
This role is mainly performed indoors in a traditional office setting but occasionally requires outdoor work on construction sites.
Estimating managers may travel to job sites and meet with clients, though most of their work is desk-based. They typically work regular hours but may need to work extra to meet deadlines.
The job can be stressful due to the pressure of submitting accurate bids on time and within budget. There is significant competition for jobs, requiring high accuracy in estimates.
The working conditions may include:
- Job site environments with machines, tools, heavy equipment, chemicals, solvents, dust, and fumes.
- Occasional exposure to extreme weather conditions.
- Uneven ground on job sites.
