Senior Transmission System Operator
Role Summary: This position is responsible for real-time actions to maintain the reliability of the Bulk Electric System, including shedding firm load when necessary. Operates under PJM authority as Reliability Coordinator, Transmission Operator, and Balancing Authority. Key duties include monitoring system elements, responding to emergencies, and managing voltage and power flows. The role requires mastery of NERC and PJM regulations and involves training and supervising junior operators. Controls transmission and distribution equipment using SCADA and prepares switching orders to ensure safety.
Required:
- 5+ years of electrical or mechanical experience in a utility (6+ months counts as 1 year; a master's degree can substitute for 1 year of experience).
- 3+ years as a System Operator or similar role.
- NERC Transmission Operator or Reliability Coordinator certification.
- If not PJM certified, must obtain certification within 3 months.
- Mastery-level knowledge of NERC regulations, electrical principles, control systems, substation equipment, and safety procedures.
- Strong skills in communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and computer systems (Microsoft Word, EMS, DMS).
- Must operate a vehicle and respond to emergency storm events.
- Work 12-hour rotating shifts.
Preferred:
- PJM Transmission System Operator certification.
- Utility experience and teaching skills.
- 6+ years of directly related experience.
- Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline preferred (Electrical, Mechanical, Industrial). Associate's degree or High School Diploma with additional experience acceptable.
