John Merry - Substation Engineering

"Over the last two years, I've led the physical substation design for 14 new substations for solar farm interconnection projects from various states all across the nation. So I am very proud to have been a part of building a more renewable electric grid."

Gerardo Traverso - VP, Transportation Engineering, George F. Young, Inc.

"Most people are not aware of how much engineering and engineers affect their daily living. For example, when you turn the lights in the morning when you wake up, thank an engineer who designed the switches, receptacles, and light bulbs in addition to the distribution panel, the power pole, transmission lines and generation plant. When we brush our teeth and take a shower in the morning, well at least some of us, thank an engineer who designed the water main that brings the water to your house. Thank an engineer who designed the faucet, the pump station and water treatment plant that purifies the potable water available at the turn of a faucet. When we get ready to go to our jobs, or run errands, we exit our driveway and drive on local street in a subdivision that was designed by a group of engineers. From there we go on to major collector and arterial roads that were also designed by engineers including all the signals, bridges, and drainage systems. As you can see, your life has been greatly impacted by engineers and you have not even made it to work yet and it is only 8 am!! As a Civil Engineer there is no bigger satisfaction, sense of pride and passion than to be driving along the road and tell your wife and kids, โ€œlook! I designed this traffic signal and this road including bike lanes and sidewalkโ€ even if it is the 100th time you have done so! To work on a project from conceptual design and seeing your vision for a project put on a piece of paper or on a computer screen and then seeing that concept being constructed and solving many problems of safety or capacity and improving the lives of the citizens of Florida is what drives us Engineers to wake up in the morning and face the new challenges and work on projects that will improve the quality of lives of the people we serve. If I would have the opportunity of a do-over, I will again select Civil Engineering as my profession."

The Team at Skellig

"Recently, we were tasked with helping one of our clients convert the automation on a process being repurposed to manufacture a COVID vaccine. We started in August 2020 and the sense of purpose and collaboration cross functionally was very exciting to be part of. One of the big success stories was sourcing some high quality automation engineers to expand the team. We worked with LVI Associates to source and help us hire and relocate 3 amazing automation engineers. The project was a huge success and as a collective team we pulled off the impossible."

Brett Varner - Vice President, Transmission & Distribution, Mesa Associates, Inc.

As an Engineer in the electric power industry, I love the impact that I can make on my community. For our transmission designs, the successful implementation of a project means that an entire regional area can be served with a reliable and resilient electric grid. On the distribution side of the business, our projects impact the local community by providing safe and reliable power for everyday living. During my career at Mesa Associates, we have worked as a cohesive team to accomplish these objectives with the highest quality and best value. From providing traditional transmission and distribution design services to providing damage assessments during hurricanes or wildfires, our team has impacted our communities in so many positive ways across the entire United States. I am very proud of the dedication of our Associates and the way we work together to make the world a better place.
