The Skills That Will Get You Hired In Data Center Construction Ryan Ward

Not long ago, many contractors were happy to hire candidates with transferable experience.

Today, they're looking for people who can step onto site and lead complex, mission critical projects from day one.

The data center construction market continues to expand, with major projects breaking ground across the United States to meet growing demand for digital infrastructure. According to JLL, more than 35 GW of data center capacity is currently under construction across North America, with 64% of that pipeline now located in emerging markets rather than traditional hubs.

Major developments from Microsoft, Google, AWS, Meta and OpenAI continue to reshape markets including Northern Virginia, Dallas-Fort Worth, Phoenix and Columbus, creating sustained demand for experienced construction professionals.

But as the market develops and grows, so do the skills employers are looking for.

What skills are employers looking for?

As data center projects become larger and more technically demanding, contractors are placing greater emphasis on candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Leadership experience on complex construction projects
  • Mission critical project delivery
  • Mechanical construction expertise
  • Experience with liquid cooling systems and high-performance building services
  • Strong project management and site coordination skills
  • The ability to deliver fast-paced, technically demanding programmes

While previous data center experience remains highly sought after, it's not the only route into the industry. Ryan Ward, Associate Vice President at LVI Associates, has seen that change firsthand:

In the early stages of the boom, contractors could bring in professionals from healthcare, commercial construction and manufacturing to help meet demand. Now they need people that can lead them and get the job done.

For experienced construction professionals, that's creating opportunities to progress faster than in many traditional sectors. Candidates with proven leadership experience, mechanical expertise or previous mission critical projects are increasingly finding themselves in demand, often with access to larger projects, stronger career progression and highly competitive compensation packages.

Experience still matters

Demand for data center construction remains incredibly strong. In key markets such as Northern Virginia, Texas, Oklahoma and Georgia, new developments continue to move through planning and into construction.

However, the challenge is no longer whether projects are being approved. It's whether contractors have the right people to deliver them, says Ryan:

Planning is done, the design is done, now they just need to build, get boots on the ground.

As projects increase in scale and technical complexity, successful delivery depends on experienced site leadership, strong project management and specialist mechanical expertise. That's why many contractors are placing greater emphasis on professionals who have already delivered complex, high-performance projects.

Technical expertise is the differentiator

One of the biggest developments is the growing adoption of liquid cooling systems. Compared with traditional commercial buildings, these systems require a different level of mechanical expertise:

Now they're talking about what size pipe they've used on these jobs. Because liquid cooling is such a big thing, there's such an amount of pressure going through the pipes compared to an office building. They need to fabricate the pipe, weld it, and install it on rigs and cranes, which you wouldn't have to do on a different project.

As a result, employers are asking more detailed technical questions than they were even six months ago. Practical experience with mission critical mechanical systems, complex pipework and high-performance building services is becoming an increasingly valuable asset.

Can you move into data center construction?

If you're considering a move into data centers, you may already have more transferable experience than you think.

Healthcare facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturing, semiconductor plants, industrial projects and other mission critical environments all develop professionals with experience of complex building services and technically demanding construction.

In an ideal world, you have the mission critical experience. A lot of them are even large commercial buildings, production facilities, healthcare, high-rise hospitals. If one thing goes, the whole thing shuts down. It's the same thing in a data center,

summarises Ryan. Being able to demonstrate how you've managed technically complex projects, coordinated multiple trades or delivered critical mechanical systems can make a significant difference during the hiring process, even if your background isn't in data centers.

Looking beyond your next project

As the market matures, project pipelines are becoming just as important as individual project wins.

Unlike traditional commercial construction, many data center contractors secure repeat work through long-term client relationships, creating greater continuity for both businesses and employees, says Ryan

Once you're in, you're in. You'll always win some kind of data center work.

For construction professionals, that creates opportunities beyond the immediate role. Joining a contractor with a strong pipeline can offer greater job security, exposure to increasingly complex projects and long-term career progression in one of construction's fastest-growing sectors.
