Structural Department Manager

This position requires candidates to be based in Indianapolis or willing to relocate. Candidates must be a licensed Professional Engineer (PE).

A small, fast-growing, and entrepreneurial consulting engineering firm is looking to appoint a Senior Structural Engineer to lead and grow its structural department. The firm offers full-service engineering capabilities across Civil & Environmental, Structural, Mechanical, and Electrical disciplines, with a strong emphasis on quality delivery and long-term client relationships.

The Role

This role will serve as the leader of the structural group, responsible for both technical delivery and team oversight. The successful candidate will take ownership of project execution, mentor junior engineers, and act as a trusted advisor to clients.

This position is ideal for a technically strong, client-facing engineer who enjoys balancing hands-on design with leadership responsibilities and is motivated by the opportunity to build and scale a team.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the structural engineering department, including oversight of staff and project delivery
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, evaluating needs and developing solutions
  • Design and develop structural systems, calculations, and project details
  • Maintain full professional responsibility for structural deliverables (stamping/sign-off)
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards
  • Coordinate and manage subconsultants and multidisciplinary project teams
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers and technical staff
  • Oversee construction administration, including site visits and issue resolution
  • Drive the growth and development of client relationships

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) - required
  • Minimum of 10 years of structural engineering experience
  • Proven track record of delivering projects on time, on budget, and to a high standard
  • Strong leadership experience, including mentoring and team development
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and technical writing skills
  • Highly detail-oriented with a strong commitment to quality

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with water and wastewater projects
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar design platforms
  • Background in consulting engineering environments
