Position Title: Estimator - Rail Transit Projects
Location: Massachusetts (office-based with periodic site visits across New England)
Employment Type: Full-time, exempt
Overview
Typical Electrical Scope
- Power distribution systems up to medium voltage
- Traction power facility power distribution interfaces
- Station electrical systems: switchgear, panels, transformers, normal/emergency power
- Interior, exterior, platform, and tunnel lighting
- Fire alarm and life‑safety systems
- Communications and low‑voltage infrastructure: PA, CCTV, access control, SCADA interfaces, fare collection, signage
- Trackside/ROW electrical systems: power to signal houses, bungalows, wayside devices, trackside lighting, grounding/bonding
- Site electrical: parking lot lighting, site power distribution
- Temporary power/lighting for construction
Responsibilities
- Review drawings, specifications, addenda, RFIs, and reference documents
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for all electrical scopes
- Build complete cost estimates including labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and general conditions
- Identify gaps, risks, phasing constraints, track access issues, outages, and operational impacts specific to transit projects
- Solicit and level vendor and subcontractor proposals
- Develop value alternates and cost‑saving options
- Support preconstruction, project management, and operations to ensure estimates reflect real production rates
- Participate in internal estimate reviews, risk reviews, and turnover processes
- Assist with budgeting, ROM pricing, and change‑order development
- Maintain knowledge of MBTA and other regional transit authority standards and approved products
- Contribute to historical cost databases and benchmarking
Qualifications
- Electrical estimating experience in commercial, industrial, infrastructure, or transit sectors
- Ability to read and interpret electrical, civil, structural, architectural, and systems drawings
- Proficiency with estimating and takeoff software and Excel‑based estimating tools
- Strong understanding of electrical construction methods and labor units
- Familiarity with transit‑specific requirements: outages, track time, flagging, restricted work windows
- Knowledge of NEC, NFPA, and applicable state/local codes
- Detail‑oriented analytical skill set suited for fixed‑deadline estimating environments
- Effective written and verbal communication skills
Preferred Background
- Experience with MBTA or other major U.S. transit authorities
- Field experience in electrical construction for rail or infrastructure
- Understanding of design‑build, CM/GC, and progressive‑design delivery formats
- Exposure to signal power, communications infrastructure, or traction power interfaces
- Relevant technical degree or equivalent industry experience
