Position Summary - Solar Field Technician
A clean energy organization is seeking a dedicated Solar Field Technician to support the commissioning, operations, and maintenance of solar energy systems, battery storage units, and electric vehicle charging stations. This role is ideal for individuals passionate about renewable energy and skilled in both mechanical and electrical systems. The technician will work across multiple sites, ensuring optimal performance and safety of energy infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities of Solar Field Technician
Commissioning
- Collaborate with project managers and engineers to create and execute commissioning plans tailored to each project's specifications and equipment requirements.
- Ensure commissioning activities align with project time-lines and milestones.
- Identify and document any issues during commissioning, coordinating with installation teams for resolution.
- Provide technical and troubleshooting support throughout the commissioning phase.
- Maintain detailed records of all commissioning procedures and test outcomes.
Operations & Maintenance
- Conduct routine mechanical and electrical troubleshooting, including instrumentation calibration.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance tasks as assigned, based on skill level and site needs.
- Complete work orders and maintenance reports using a digital field service platform.
- Work with various system components including central and string inverters, data acquisition systems (DAS), tracker systems, and balance-of-system hardware.
- Follow all applicable safety standards and protocols (e.g., OSHA, NFPA) during work preparation and execution.
- Properly use and maintain company-provided tools, equipment, and vehicles.
- Participate in ongoing training and complete required safety documentation (e.g., Job Hazard Analysis, Lockout/Tagout).
- Conduct thermal imaging and insulation resistance testing, and generate corresponding reports.
Qualifications - Solar Field Technician
- Bachelor's degree preferred; alternatively, 4 years of field experience or technical training is highly valued.
- Strong understanding of photovoltaic systems and electrical performance characteristics.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical plans, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation.
- Comfortable working in both mechanical and electrical environments.
- Capable of following detailed verbal and written instructions.
- Willingness to be available for weekend or emergency dispatch as needed.
- Able to work independently or collaboratively, fostering a positive team environment.
- High attention to detail and strong communication skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and operational excellence.
Environmental & Physical Requirements - Solar Field Technician
- Must be able to work in diverse weather conditions including heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather.
- May be exposed to heavy equipment and moving mechanical parts.
- Variable noise levels may be present.
- Ability to navigate uneven terrain and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent bending, kneeling, walking, standing, stooping, and ladder climbing required.
