Business Development Manager - Electrical Power

Job Summary:

This position is responsible for identifying, developing, and managing new business opportunities within the electric utility sector. The role calls for a strategic thinker with deep industry knowledge, including market trends, regulatory frameworks, and evolving customer needs. The ideal candidate brings a strong track record of driving revenue growth, cultivating long-term client relationships, and offering innovative solutions across public, private, and investor-owned utilities.


Primary Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning & Market Development

  • Develop and execute business development strategies to support company growth in the electric utility space, including utilities, independent power producers, industrial power users, and campus energy systems.

  • Evaluate and pursue new markets, clients, and strategic partnerships.

Market Research & Analysis

  • Conduct ongoing research to monitor industry trends, regulatory shifts, and competitive dynamics.

  • Leverage market intelligence to identify new business opportunities and position offerings accordingly.

Client Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with key stakeholders including utility companies, public agencies, and industry partners.

  • Understand client procurement processes and ensure inclusion in relevant bidding opportunities and master service agreements (MSAs).

Sales & Revenue Generation

  • Lead the full sales cycle from prospecting through closing, including proposal development, pricing strategy, contract negotiation, and post-sale follow-up.

  • Meet or exceed established sales goals and contribute to organizational revenue targets.

Product & Service Development
Promote and tailor offerings that include:

  • Electrical power engineering services

  • Protection and control system design (traditional and IEC61850)

  • Relay settings and power system studies

  • Substation physical and control design

  • Custom panel and rack fabrication

  • Custom switchgear and modular control buildings

  • Electrical testing and commissioning (factory and site acceptance)

  • SCADA and automation systems development

  • IEC61850 system integration

  • Microgrid and generation control systems

  • Turnkey power plant protection and control upgrades

Collaborate internally across engineering, fabrication, and commissioning teams to present vertically integrated solutions to clients. Provide feedback from the market to inform future service offerings and technical innovations.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with internal teams, including marketing, finance, and operations, to align on business development goals and project execution.

Performance Tracking & Reporting

  • Monitor and report on KPIs such as sales pipeline, revenue performance, and client satisfaction using internal CRM systems.

  • Provide regular updates to leadership on progress and key initiatives.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, or a related field (MBA or advanced degree preferred).

  • At least 10 years of experience in business development, sales, or related roles in the electric utility sector.

  • Strong understanding of utility market structure, key players, and current industry challenges.

  • Demonstrated success in achieving sales goals and expanding customer bases.

  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.

  • Proven ability to build trust and rapport with customers and stakeholders.

  • Analytical mindset with the ability to assess complex business challenges.

  • Capable of working both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with transmission and distribution systems, grid modernization, or utility-scale energy solutions.

  • Familiarity with regulatory and compliance frameworks in the utility industry.

  • Professional certifications related to energy markets, engineering, or business development.
