About the Role
The Field PLC Engineer is responsible for the deployment, commissioning, and support of electronic control systems for large-scale data center environments using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs). This is a technical, client-facing, and field-based role requiring significant travel (50%) to support both remote and onsite installation, testing, and troubleshooting activities.
The position focuses on ensuring reliable and scalable automation across HVAC, mechanical, and electrical systems during critical deployment phases.
Key Responsibilities
Field Deployment & Commissioning
- Travel to client sites (50%) to support deployment, commissioning, and startup of PLC-based control systems for data center facilities
- Perform onsite programming, testing, and troubleshooting of PLC systems controlling HVAC, mechanical, and electrical equipment
- Provide remote and onsite technical support during installation, commissioning, and post-deployment phases
- Work directly with clients, contractors, and field teams to resolve integration issues, system errors, and performance concerns
- Implement modifications and updates to PLC programs and control strategies in live environments
- Debug installation issues during commissioning, including PLC logic, hardware, and communication networks
- Support system startup, functional testing, and validation to ensure compliance with design specifications
- Diagnose and resolve system faults in real time, often under time-sensitive conditions
- Collaborate with engineering, construction, and vendor teams to integrate controls and subsystems
- Document programming updates, system configurations, and field changes for project turnover
- Provide training and support to client operations teams during system handoff
- Participate in design reviews and client meetings to provide field engineering input
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience as a PLC Programmer or Engineer with field deployment and commissioning experience
- Experience with Studio 5000 / Rockwell Automation platforms in production environments
- Hands-on experience commissioning central plant systems such as chillers or boilers
- Experience implementing redundancy strategies and programming redundant PLC systems
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving ability in time-sensitive field environments
- Ability to work independently onsite and manage multiple concurrent activities
- Strong communication skills for client-facing technical discussions
- Willingness and ability to travel up to 50%, including extended site assignments
- Strong organization, task management, and documentation skills
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel domestically and internationally
