Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Head of O&M to lead the operations and maintenance function for a growing Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) portfolio in Japan. Based in Tokyo, this role will be responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost‑effective operation of assets across the full lifecycle, while building and leading a small technical team.
This is a senior, hands‑on leadership role suited to an engineering professional with strong operational expertise and experience in power, renewables, or energy storage assets.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the O&M function for utility‑scale BESS assets across Japan
- Build, mentor, and manage a team of 3 O&M engineers/technicians
- Develop and implement O&M strategies, procedures, and KPIs to maximize asset availability and performance
- Oversee day‑to‑day operations, maintenance planning, fault response, and root‑cause analysis
- Manage relationships with OEMs, EPCs, O&M contractors, and grid operators
- Ensure compliance with Japanese regulations, safety standards, and grid requirements
- Lead performance monitoring, data analysis, and reporting to senior management
- Support commissioning, handover, and transition from construction to operations
- Drive continuous improvement in reliability, cost efficiency, and operational excellence
- Act as the technical authority for O&M matters internally and externally
Requirements
- Engineering background (Electrical, Mechanical, Power, or related discipline)
- Proven experience in O&M leadership roles within:
- BESS, renewables (solar/wind), power generation, or grid‑connected assets
- Strong understanding of asset lifecycle management and operational risk
- Experience managing teams and external service providers
- Solid knowledge of safety, compliance, and regulatory requirements in Japan
- Ability to work cross‑functionally with development, construction, commercial, and finance teams
- Strong problem‑solving skills with a hands‑on, practical mindset
Preferred / Nice to Have
- Direct experience with utility‑scale BESS operations
- Experience working with Japanese utilities, TSOs, or regulators
- Business‑level Japanese and English
- Experience scaling O&M functions in a growing organization
