Roadway Design Engineer
The Roadway Design Engineer will support the planning and design of transportation projects, with a focus on highway and roadway systems for state and local agency clients. This role contributes to all phases of project development-from concept through final design-while working alongside multidisciplinary teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform roadway and highway design, including horizontal and vertical geometry and corridor modeling
- Develop roadway design plans, including plan/profile sheets, cross-sections, and typical sections
- Assist in preparing maintenance of traffic (MOT), signing, and pavement marking plans
- Prepare construction plans, quantities, and supporting engineering documentation
- Apply AASHTO and agency design criteria in project development
- Utilize Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer for modeling and plan production
- Follow established CADD standards and file management systems
- Coordinate with project managers and senior engineers through all phases (concept, preliminary, and final design)
- Collaborate with internal disciplines such as drainage, structures, traffic, and utilities
- Support and mentor junior staff as needed
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering
- 3-5 years of roadway or highway design experience
- Experience developing roadway plans (plan/profile, cross-sections, and typical sections)
- Working knowledge of AASHTO design standards
- Proficiency in Bentley MicroStation and OpenRoads Designer
- Experience preparing construction documents and quantity calculations
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with DOT standards and plan preparation requirements (state-level experience a plus)
- Familiarity with CADD standards and file management systems (e.g., ProjectWise)
- Experience developing graphics and reports for concept studies
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools including PowerPoint and Project
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain
