Principal Steady State Engineer
Overview
A confidential energy and power infrastructure organization is seeking a Principal Steady State Power Systems Engineer to lead advanced steady‑state analysis and technical decision‑making for complex electric power systems. This role is intended for a senior‑level engineer with deep expertise in power flow, voltage/reactive analysis, contingency evaluation, and steady‑state system planning, and a proven ability to own workstreams end‑to‑end.
The successful candidate will play a critical role in defining system performance, evaluating operating limits, and supporting large‑scale generation and grid infrastructure projects across transmission‑connected and islanded operating environments. This is a highly technical, individual‑contributor role with influence across engineering, planning, and execution teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and lead steady‑state power system studies, including power flow, contingency analysis (N‑1 / N‑1‑1), voltage/reactive assessments, and thermal loading evaluations
- Develop and review steady‑state network models for transmission‑connected generation, load, and energy infrastructure projects
- Evaluate system behavior under varying operating conditions, including peak, light‑load, and stressed system scenarios
- Perform and interpret voltage stability, reactive margin, and transfer capability analyses
- Support generator interconnection and system impact studies, ensuring steady‑state compliance with applicable criteria and planning standards
- Develop and review single‑line diagrams, system operating configurations, and study assumptions
- Collaborate with adjacent disciplines (dynamic studies, protection, controls, project engineering) to ensure alignment across study phases
- Mentor junior engineers and provide technical oversight, review, and guidance on steady‑state methodologies and best practices
- Clearly communicate results, risks, and recommendations to technical and non‑technical stakeholders
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline
- 10+ years of professional experience focused on steady‑state electric power system analysis
- Strong expertise in power flow, contingency analysis, voltage/reactive studies, and steady‑state system planning
- Advanced proficiency with industry‑standard tools such as PSS/E, PowerWorld, PSLF, ETAP, or equivalent steady‑state platforms
- Solid understanding of transmission system behavior, operating limits, and planning criteria
- Experience supporting generator interconnection studies or large‑scale grid integration efforts
- Ability to independently own analysis, exercise sound engineering judgment, and defend technical conclusions
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems
- Experience working with ISO/RTO, utility, developer, or consulting‑led planning environments
- Familiarity with NERC, regional planning criteria, and utility interconnection standards
- Exposure to projects involving high renewable penetration, large load integration, or constrained transmission systems
- Experience mentoring engineers or leading technical workstreams on multi‑disciplinary projects
