Senior Engineer

About the Position

A growing power engineering firm is seeking an Engineer IV / Senior Electrical Engineer with strong experience in physical electrical substation design. The Senior Engineer independently develops, designs, and analyzes electrical power systems and substations while providing technical oversight, acting as an escalation point for complex decisions, and supporting internal teams, clients, and field personnel. This role also offers growth into broader leadership responsibilities, including mentoring and workload planning.


Key Responsibilities

Engineering and Design

  • Independently produce physical substation design packages and conceptual designs.
  • Specify major equipment such as generators, transformers, breakers, and switchgear.
  • Oversee technical drawings including one-lines, P&C schematics, interconnection drawings, layout plans, grounding plans, conduit and cable tray plans, and installation details.

Technical Leadership

  • Guide engineers, designers, and drafters; perform QA/QC reviews.
  • Serve as technical lead and escalation point for complex issues.

Engineering Analysis

  • Perform or oversee studies: power flow, short-circuit, coordination, device evaluation, ground grid, lightning protection, and arc-flash.

Client and Project Engagement

  • Participate in client meetings, technical discussions, and project scoping.
  • Partner with internal leadership for sensitive or complex conversations.
  • Ensure clear communication with clients, contractors, and vendors.
  • Take full ownership of assigned projects.

Qualifications

Required

  • BSEE from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 10+ years of experience in electrical engineering with a focus on substation physical design.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Strong knowledge of ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, NEC, NESC, and related standards.
  • Solid understanding of constructability and field installation practices.

Preferred

  • NCEES record.
  • Participation in professional societies such as IEEE.
  • Experience mentoring junior technical staff.
