Senior Transmission Planning Engineer

About the Role

We're seeking a transmission planning engineer to support steady-state, dynamic, and short-circuit analyses across a range of study horizons-from near-term reliability assessments to long-term expansion planning. You'll evaluate system performance under N-0/N-1/N-1-1 conditions, develop mitigation alternatives, and collaborate closely with internal stakeholders, ISOs/RTOs, and interconnection customers. This role is ideal for someone with hands-on PSS®E experience and a solid understanding of transmission planning standards and study methodologies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform load flow/power flow analyses and contingency screening (N-0, N-1, selected N-1-1) to assess thermal, voltage, and stability limits.
  • Execute short-circuit and dynamic stability studies; contribute to remedial action plans and operating guides.
  • Support generator and load interconnection studies: develop study assumptions, build cases, perform sensitivity analyses, and craft technical recommendations.
  • Evaluate and compare network upgrades (e.g., reconductoring, reconfiguration, reactive support, FACTS devices, transformer additions, new lines) using cost/benefit and constructability lenses.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, presentations, and one-line diagrams; present findings to internal leadership and external stakeholders (e.g., utilities, ISOs/RTOs, developers).
  • Maintain and validate power system models (bus/branch, dynamic data, protection modeling assumptions) and ensure study traceability.
  • Contribute to planning criteria interpretation and updates; apply NERC TPL standards, regional criteria, and applicable tariff requirements.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with protection, operations, substation, and line design teams to align solutions and schedules.
  • Track risks, issues, and decisions; support project timelines and resource planning.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering (Power focus preferred) or related field.
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in transmission planning or closely related power systems analysis.
  • Proficiency with PSS®E for steady-state and (ideally) dynamic simulations; familiarity with model building, data reconciliation, and automation of study workflows.
  • Practical knowledge of load flow/power flow and short-circuit methodologies, voltage/reactive control concepts, and contingency analysis.
  • Working understanding of NERC TPL standards, ISO/RTO interconnection processes, and planning criteria.
  • Strong analytical writing and communication skills with a track record of clear technical documentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple study assignments, prioritize deadlines, and work both independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with one or more of the following tools: PowerWorld, PSLF, TARA, ASPEN OneLiner, PSCAD/EMTDC, PSS®SINCAL, CAPE.
  • Familiarity with dynamic stability (small-signal and transient), voltage stability, and reactive power planning studies.
  • Scripting/automation skills (e.g., Python with PSS®E API, PowerWorld SimAuto, PSLF EPCL).
  • Exposure to non-wires alternatives, grid-enhancing technologies (e.g., DLR, topology optimization, PSTs), or Advanced Grid Modeling.
  • Understanding of FERC, tariff processes, and regional planning in ISO/RTO environments (e.g., PJM, ISO-NE, NYISO, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, CAISO).
  • Experience in interconnection studies (GIA), generator modeling (renewables, IBRs), or inverter-based resource performance requirements.
  • EIT/FE or P.E. license (or progress toward licensure).

What You'll Bring

  • A system-thinking mindset with attention to model fidelity, validation, and sensitivity testing.
  • Clear, concise communication of complex technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Initiative to improve study processes, templates, and model governance.

What We Offer

  • Competitive compensation with performance-based incentives.
  • Professional development support (training, conferences, and credentials).
  • Flexible work arrangements and a collaborative engineering culture.
