Position Summary
The Survey Crew Chief is responsible for leading and performing complex field surveying assignments in support of civil engineering, transportation, land development, and infrastructure projects. This role includes supervising survey crews, ensuring accuracy and quality of data collection, coordinating with project managers and clients, and maintaining compliance with safety and professional standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise survey field crews on a variety of projects including boundary, topographic, construction staking, ALTA/NSPS, and as-built surveys
- Plan, organize, and execute daily field survey activities to meet project schedules and budgets
- Operate and maintain survey equipment including robotic total stations, GNSS/GPS units, levels, and data collectors
- Ensure accurate field notes, data collection, and daily reporting
- Perform field calculations and resolve discrepancies in measurements or data
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure project requirements are met
- Review and understand project plans, specifications, and scope of work
- Ensure adherence to safety policies, procedures, and regulations
- Provide on-the-job training and guidance to survey crew members
- Assist with boundary analysis, right-of-way surveys, and construction layout as required
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in surveying or related field preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive field surveying experience, including experience as a crew chief or party chief
- Strong knowledge of survey methods, procedures, and best practices
- Proficiency with survey software and data collection systems
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, plats, and legal descriptions
- Valid driver's license with the ability to operate company vehicles
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with DOT, municipal, or transportation projects
- Familiarity with Indiana survey practices and standards
- CST (Certified Survey Technician) certification or ability to obtain
- Experience working with CAD technicians and survey processing workflows
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Ability to lift and carry surveying equipment up to 50 pounds
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods
Work Environment
- Primarily field-based with occasional office work
- Work may include travel to project sites throughout central Indiana
