Building Automation Controls Technician - (Travel up to 50%)

About the Role

We are seeking a Controls Technician with strong Distech Controls experience to support the installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and servicing of building automation systems across commercial, industrial, healthcare, higher education, and data center facilities. This role requires up to 50% travel to project sites throughout the region and occasionally nationwide, depending on project requirements.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Distech control systems, HVAC controls, and BAS/DDC technologies. This individual will be comfortable working independently in the field, supporting both new project installations and ongoing service work while delivering exceptional customer service.


Key Responsibilities

Installation, Startup & Commissioning

  • Install, configure, and commission Distech building automation systems and associated controls equipment.
  • Perform controller startup, point-to-point checkout, and system verification.
  • Validate proper operation of HVAC equipment, field devices, and network communications.
  • Support system integration with third-party equipment and BAS platforms.
  • Assist with system upgrades, retrofits, and expansion projects.

Troubleshooting & Service

  • Diagnose and resolve issues involving controllers, sensors, actuators, VFDs, and network communications.
  • Troubleshoot BAS/DDC systems to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and system performance evaluations.
  • Modify control sequences and adjust programming as required to improve system performance.
  • Support emergency service calls and critical system issues when needed.

Programming & System Support

  • Utilize Distech software tools to configure, commission, and troubleshoot controllers.
  • Assist with graphics updates, programming modifications, and system optimization.
  • Verify proper operation of BACnet and IP-based control networks.
  • Support integration and interoperability between building automation systems and mechanical equipment.

Customer & Site Interaction

  • Serve as the primary on-site technical representative during service and project activities.
  • Communicate project progress, findings, and recommendations to customers and internal teams.
  • Provide operator training and system support as required.
  • Build and maintain strong customer relationships through professionalism and technical expertise.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete commissioning documentation, service reports, and project records accurately.
  • Document all programming changes, system modifications, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Track labor, materials, and project progress throughout assignments.
  • Maintain updated as-built and system documentation when applicable.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all company safety procedures and customer site requirements.
  • Ensure all work is performed in accordance with industry standards, project specifications, and applicable codes.
  • Promote a safe working environment on all job sites.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of experience within Building Automation, HVAC Controls, or BAS/DDC systems.
  • Hands-on experience working with Distech Controls products and software.
  • Strong understanding of HVAC equipment, control strategies, and system operation.
  • Experience commissioning, troubleshooting, and servicing BAS systems.
  • Familiarity with BACnet, Modbus, and IP-based network communications.
  • Ability to read and interpret control drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, and sequences of operation.
  • Strong electrical and low-voltage troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer-facing abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and manage field assignments efficiently.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Distech EC-Net, Niagara, or other Niagara-based platforms.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical facilities, healthcare, higher education, commercial, or industrial projects.
  • Background in startup, commissioning, and controls installation.
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals including IP addressing, switches, and BAS communications.
  • Experience with HVAC equipment including air handlers, chillers, boilers, VAV systems, and central plants.

Travel Requirements

  • Willingness to travel up to 50% based on project and customer needs.
  • Travel may include overnight stays and multi-day project assignments.
  • Ability to support projects across multiple states and customer locations.
  • Company vehicle, travel expenses, and per diem provided where applicable.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, and work on active construction and operational job sites.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, and access mechanical spaces.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to wear required PPE and comply with site safety standards.
