Energy Management Systems Engineer
Position Summary
We are seeking a Systems Architect - Energy Operations to support and maintain mission-critical Energy Management Systems (EMS) and associated applications. This role ensures the reliability and performance of transmission operations infrastructure, with a strong focus on compliance with industry standards and operational protocols.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform regular patching and health checks on EMS servers running Linux.
- Integrate and maintain EMS-related applications and tools for operational monitoring.
- Manage code deployments, system upgrades, and application migrations.
- Develop and implement situational awareness dashboards and monitoring utilities.
- Lead troubleshooting and recovery efforts for EMS-related incidents.
- Contribute to the development of automation tools and process improvements.
- Administer and support outage tracking and internal EMS support tools.
- Monitor SCADA, ICCP, and EMS data flows and application performance.
- Build and maintain historian databases (e.g., Aveva PI), including visualization tools and data links.
- Create analytics and dashboards to support operations and engineering teams.
- Collaborate with regional transmission operators and grid coordinators for data exchange and emergency readiness.
- Apply knowledge of cybersecurity and compliance frameworks, including NERC CIP.
- Provide 24/7 support for system reliability and operator inquiries.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and best practices in energy systems architecture.
Leadership & Collaboration
- May mentor junior engineers or analysts and contribute to departmental performance goals.
- Participate in cross-functional initiatives to improve system reliability and operational efficiency.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 8 years of experience in the energy or utilities sector, with a focus on EMS or SCADA systems.
- Strong background in Linux system administration and relational databases (Oracle or SQL).
- Experience with EMS platforms such as GE XA/21, ABB, Siemens, OSI, or similar.
- Familiarity with data historian platforms (Aveva PI, OSIsoft PI).
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages: C/C++, Java, Perl, or VB.
- Understanding of network protocols, data exchange standards, and system integration.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity and compliance standards (e.g., NERC CIP).
- Experience with storage systems and backup/recovery procedures.
- Strong documentation, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with outage management tools and EMS support applications.
- Exposure to ITIL practices and system lifecycle management.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Valid driver's license and ability to travel regionally as needed.
