Senior Controls Engineer
Role Overview
This senior engineering position focuses on the design and implementation of sophisticated control systems. The role involves leading technical efforts across multiple projects, mentoring less experienced engineers, and ensuring solutions meet high standards for safety, performance, and reliability. Collaboration across teams and direct client engagement are key components.
Key Responsibilities
- Spearhead the development and integration of control systems including PLCs, HMIs, motion control, and safety mechanisms.
- Diagnose and resolve complex technical issues; conduct root cause analysis and implement long-term fixes.
- Define system architecture and ensure adherence to industry standards and best practices.
- Identify and improve inefficiencies in engineering workflows to boost quality and productivity.
- Provide technical oversight and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers.
- Coordinate with internal teams to establish project scope, timelines, and budgets.
- Maintain professional client interactions to support positive representation and outcomes.
- Manage multiple concurrent projects, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and deadlines.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure smooth integration of control systems.
- Maintain consistent attendance and timely completion of tasks.
- Exhibit strong communication and teamwork skills.
Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related discipline, with a focus on controls preferred.
Experience: At least 5 years of relevant engineering experience, ideally in a manufacturing or automation setting.
Core Competencies
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Advanced PLC programming (Ladder Logic, Structured Text); familiarity with WAGO and CoDeSys is a plus.
- Skilled in HMI/SCADA development and PLC integration.
- Experience with motion control, servo systems, and VFDs.
- Strong grasp of industrial safety systems and devices.
- Knowledge of communication protocols (EtherNet/IP, Modbus TCP, Profinet, MQTT, OPC UA).
- Familiarity with machine vision and barcode systems.
- Exposure to industrial and collaborative robotics (e.g., UR, Fanuc, ABB, KUKA).
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics and generate I/O documentation.
- Effective written and verbal communication.
- Strong organizational and planning abilities.
- Detail-oriented with a proactive approach to prioritization and decision-making.
- Leadership experience and strategic thinking.
- Understanding of relevant electrical and safety standards (UL508A, NFPA 79, NEC, IEC).
Preferred Skills
- Experience leading large-scale automation projects, especially in material handling or warehousing.
- Expertise in reusable code structures and control system templates.
- Deep knowledge of electrical safety across various voltage levels.
Additional Requirements
- Physical ability to inspect and troubleshoot equipment.
- Comfortable using hand tools and diagnostic instruments.
- Willingness to travel up to 10%.
