A leading nationwide engineering and consulting firm is seeking a skilled Survey Crew Chief to join our growing Cleveland office. This role is ideal for an experienced survey professional who excels in the field, demonstrates strong leadership capabilities, and is ready to manage all aspects of field survey operations with accuracy, safety, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a field survey crew on a wide range of survey projects, including boundary, topographic, ALTA/NSPS land title, construction staking, and utility surveys.
- Perform field data collection using modern surveying instruments such as robotic total stations, GPS/GNSS equipment, and digital levels.
- Interpret project plans, specifications, and control requirements to organize daily field tasks.
- Ensure all field notes, data files, sketches, and documentation are complete, accurate, and delivered according to company and project standards.
- Communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, and clients to ensure project needs are met.
- Maintain survey equipment and vehicles, ensuring proper operation and reporting service needs.
- Uphold and enforce company safety standards and practices in all field operations.
- Train, mentor, and oversee junior survey team members.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience as a Survey Crew Chief or equivalent field leadership role.
- Proficiency with survey equipment including total stations, GPS/GNSS rovers, data collectors, and digital levels.
- Strong understanding of survey methodologies, field procedures, and construction layout principles.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, survey plats, and CAD-generated layouts.
- Familiarity with field-to-office workflows and common survey software (e.g., Trimble Access, Leica Captivate, Carlson SurvCE).
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift 50+ pounds as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in the Cleveland/Northeast Ohio region.
- Knowledge of state and local survey standards and regulations.
- Professional Surveyor-in-Training (SIT/LSIT) certification or interest in pursuing licensure.
