Assistant Project Manager - Light Industrial Construction - Chicago
An established Midwest general contractor with a long-standing reputation for delivering high-quality commercial construction projects is seeking an Assistant Project Manager to join its growing team in the Chicagoland area. This role offers the opportunity to work alongside experienced construction professionals on a diverse portfolio of commercial, retail, self-storage, and public-sector projects while gaining exposure to all phases of the construction lifecycle. The Assistant Project Manager will play a critical role in supporting project execution, maintaining client relationships, and ensuring projects are delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.
Position Overview
The Assistant Project Manager will partner closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, subcontractors, and project stakeholders to help drive successful project outcomes from preconstruction through closeout. This individual will assist with project planning, documentation, procurement, scheduling, budgeting, and coordination activities while developing the skills necessary to advance into a Project Manager position.
Responsibilities
- Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of commercial construction projects.
- Support Project Managers with budgeting, forecasting, cost tracking, and project reporting.
- Manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, permits, and project documentation.
- Coordinate subcontractors, vendors, consultants, and internal project teams.
- Monitor project schedules and help identify potential risks, delays, and opportunities for improvement.
- Participate in owner, architect, and subcontractor meetings while maintaining meeting minutes and action items.
- Review construction drawings, specifications, contracts, and project documents.
- Track procurement schedules, material deliveries, and long-lead items.
- Assist with project buyout activities and subcontract administration.
- Support field operations teams in resolving project issues and maintaining project momentum.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, quality expectations, and project requirements.
- Assist with project closeout, punch list completion, turnover documentation, and warranty management.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field preferred.
- 2-5 years of experience in commercial construction as a Project Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, or similar role.
- Experience supporting ground-up and/or renovation projects within commercial construction environments.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
- Strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and construction management platforms such as Procore, Bluebeam, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or similar software.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Experience with retail, commercial, municipal, public-sector, self-storage, or mixed-use projects is highly desirable.
