The Opportunity

An established civil engineering organization in the Denver-area market is seeking an experienced Civil Project Manager to lead multidisciplinary project teams and manage civil engineering assignments from early planning through design and construction support.
This position is well suited to an engineer who can balance technical judgment with project delivery, staff leadership, client management, and business development. The Project Manager will oversee multiple assignments, guide engineering and design staff, maintain project schedules and budgets, and serve as a primary point of contact for clients and public agencies.
The role offers meaningful responsibility for both project execution and client relationships, with opportunities to contribute to proposals, team development, and growth of the local practice.

Key Responsibilities

Project Management

  • Manage multiple civil engineering projects, coordinating scope, schedule, budget, staffing, and deliverables.
  • Direct preparation and administration of construction documents and related project agreements.
  • Manage construction-phase support and coordination with field teams and project stakeholders.
  • Develop project scopes, fee proposals, and contracts.
  • Establish realistic project objectives and provide direction to design and technical teams.
  • Perform constructability reviews and coordinate required construction support services.
  • Maintain accountability for project delivery while independently addressing technical and operational issues.

Technical Leadership

  • Lead conceptual and preliminary civil engineering studies, considering land use, zoning, site constraints, infrastructure requirements, and regulatory considerations.
  • Oversee preparation and processing of regulatory submittals and improvement plans for both public and private projects.
  • Apply sound civil engineering principles and judgment throughout planning and design.
  • Review technical production and provide direction to engineering and design staff.
  • Apply an appropriate understanding of construction staking requirements when coordinating project design and delivery.
  • Use Civil 3D primarily from a project oversight and technical-review perspective rather than as a production-focused designer.

People Leadership

  • Supervise technical professionals and coordinate the work of project teams.
  • Provide clear direction, priorities, and expectations to engineering and support staff.
  • Manage resources effectively across multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Foster productive working relationships among internal teams, clients, consultants, and agency representatives.
  • Exercise independent judgment while remaining receptive to professional feedback.

Clients, Agencies & Business Development

  • Own and develop client relationships throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Work directly with municipalities, reviewing authorities, and other public agencies.
  • Build effective relationships with both external clients and internal project teams.
  • Support proposal development and other business-development activities.
  • Participate in scope and fee discussions and apply effective negotiation and communication skills.

Qualifications

Candidates should bring:
  • A bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Colorado Professional Engineer registration, or the ability to obtain it within six months.
  • A minimum of 5 to 10 years of relevant experience for candidates meeting the PE requirements.
  • Alternatively, 8 to 12 years of equivalent industry experience without PE licensure.
  • At least three years of experience supervising technical staff.
  • Demonstrated civil engineering project-management experience.
  • Experience managing project schedules, budgets, construction documents, scopes, fee proposals, and contracts.
  • Experience directing design and technical-support personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong client-management skills and substantial experience interacting with public agencies.
  • Experience supporting proposal development and business-development efforts.
  • Civil 3D knowledge or experience sufficient to review work and guide technical production.
  • Strong independent judgment, communication, negotiation, leadership, and time-management skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Familiarity with Colorado jurisdictional codes, engineering standards, review procedures, and related requirements within the surrounding region.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Experience with strategic planning, staff and resource allocation, production management, and team coordination.
  • Ability to maintain productive professional relationships with clients, colleagues, and agency representatives.

Compensation

Annual salary range: $100,000 to $150,000.
