Controls Project Engineer (Automation & Power Systems)

Summary
We are seeking a Controls Project Engineer to support automation, electrical controls, and power system projects within the power generation and industrial process sectors. This role will be responsible for PLC programming, control system design, electrical design, testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and field support for upgrade, retrofit, and new-build projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, program, and commission PLC-based control systems.
  • Design and engineer control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, instrumentation, and AC/DC electrical systems.
  • Create and review electrical drawings, wiring schematics, network diagrams, control logic diagrams, and system architecture drawings using AutoCAD.
  • Develop project documentation including bills of materials, cable schedules, equipment specifications, and procurement packages.
  • Program control systems based on control narratives, logic diagrams, OEM documentation, P&IDs, and cause-and-effect matrices.
  • Troubleshoot and modify existing PLC programs using operating data and site feedback.
  • Support control panel fabrication and provide technical direction during assembly and testing.
  • Perform factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), startup, commissioning, and customer training.
  • Coordinate with project managers to ensure projects are delivered on schedule, within budget, and according to technical requirements.
  • Prepare technical reports, project documentation, and status updates.

Required Experience

  • 3+ years of experience in controls engineering, automation engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience with PLC programming, testing, commissioning, and implementation in an industrial environment.
  • Experience supporting power generation, industrial manufacturing, process controls, energy, or similar industries.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with major PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens, or Emerson/GE systems.
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA platforms including FactoryTalk View, RSView, Wonderware, Cimplicity, ArchestrA, or similar systems.
  • Familiarity with gas turbine, rotating equipment, or large industrial process control applications.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control logic diagrams, P&IDs, cable schedules, and instrumentation drawings.
  • Knowledge of NEC, UL508A, and industrial electrical design standards.
  • Experience designing low-voltage power distribution systems, instrumentation systems, and control panels.
  • AutoCAD proficiency for electrical and controls design.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills involving electrical, instrumentation, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience using electrical test equipment such as multimeters, calibrators, and signal generators.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline preferred.

Travel

  • Travel to customer and project sites required.
  • Domestic and occasional international travel.
  • Approximately 30-50% travel depending on project requirements.
