Position: Controls Engineering Manager

A well-established engineering consultancy is seeking a Controls Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing automation team focused on delivering innovative control system solutions for municipal and industrial clients. This leadership role combines technical oversight, team development, and strategic project execution.

Role Overview

The Controls Engineering Manager will oversee the design, programming, testing, and commissioning of HMI/PLC-based control systems. The successful candidate will drive operational excellence across the automation group, ensuring client satisfaction and technical quality. This role requires close collaboration with senior leadership and other department heads, and includes mentoring engineers at various career stages.

Leadership Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of automation engineers

  • Provide coaching, technical guidance, and career development support

Key Duties

  • Own the full lifecycle of SCADA programming projects, from concept through commissioning

  • Ensure adherence to internal quality standards and best practices

  • Serve as the primary client liaison, building strong relationships and addressing project needs

  • Manage budgets, schedules, staffing, and overall group performance

  • Balance multiple concurrent projects while maintaining high standards

  • Represent the firm at industry events and contribute thought leadership through presentations

Required Skills & Experience

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in automation and controls programming, including leadership roles

  • At least 3 years of project management experience in SCADA-related projects

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Willingness to travel up to 20%

  • Ability to manage teams across multiple locations

Education & Credentials

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain within 12 months. Certified Automation Professional (CAP) may be considered as an alternative
