A forward-thinking engineering consultancy is seeking a skilled and motivated Design Manager to lead the delivery of high-voltage (HV) substation and electrical Balance of Plant (eBOP) designs for renewable energy infrastructure projects across Australia. Role Overview
As the Design Manager, you will oversee the planning, coordination, and execution of multidisciplinary design packages for greenfield and brownfield HV infrastructure projects. You will work closely with engineering, procurement, and construction teams to ensure seamless integration of design solutions from concept through commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the end-to-end design process for HV substations and renewable energy assets including wind, solar, and BESS.
- Coordinate internal and external engineering teams across primary, secondary, civil, structural, and protection/control disciplines.
- Support procurement activities by contributing to equipment selection, vendor engagement, and technical evaluations.
- Provide technical oversight during construction and commissioning to ensure design intent and compliance are maintained.
- Manage design reviews, constructability assessments, and Safety in Design (SiD) workshops.
- Ensure timely delivery of high-quality design documentation aligned with regulatory and client requirements.
- Interface with clients, utilities, OEMs, and subcontractors to align expectations and resolve technical issues.
- Mentor junior engineers and contribute to the development of internal engineering capabilities.
About You
- Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; CPEng or working towards chartership is highly regarded.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in HV substation and/or renewable energy project design management.
- Strong technical knowledge of HV systems, eBOP, protection and control, and SCADA integration.
- Proven ability to manage multidisciplinary teams and deliver complex designs on time and within budget.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Comfortable working across the full project lifecycle, from early design through to commissioning.
