Position Overview

The Director of Civil Engineering will oversee the performance, growth, and operational consistency of a national multi-site civil engineering business. This individual will be responsible for ensuring exceptional project delivery, developing high-performing teams, improving operational systems, and supporting the continued expansion of key client programs across the United States.

This strategic leadership position offers the opportunity to take ownership of a rapidly growing national civil engineering practice serving some of the most recognizable brands across North America. The successful candidate will drive operational excellence, develop and mentor leadership teams, strengthen key client relationships, and help shape the long-term growth strategy of a nationally integrated engineering platform.

Working closely with executive leadership, practice leaders, project teams, and major clients, this individual will play a critical role in strengthening the firm's position as a trusted partner for large-scale national development programs.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Provide leadership and direction for national multi-site civil engineering operations.
  • Develop initiatives that improve scalability, efficiency, and consistency across multiple offices and regions.
  • Support long-term business planning, growth initiatives, and operational improvements.
  • Help shape delivery strategies that strengthen client relationships and create a competitive advantage.
  • Collaborate with executive leadership to drive sustainable business growth.

Operational Management

  • Establish best practices for project delivery, communication, quality assurance, and resource management.
  • Improve operational performance through enhanced workflows, staffing strategies, and delivery systems.
  • Ensure successful execution of project scope, schedule, budget, permitting, and client requirements.
  • Monitor performance metrics and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Standardize processes across national client programs to ensure consistency and accountability.

Client Development & Relationships

  • Serve as a trusted advisor for strategic national clients.
  • Strengthen existing relationships while identifying opportunities to expand service offerings.
  • Support business development initiatives, strategic pursuits, and key account growth.
  • Partner with project teams to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction and repeat business.
  • Promote a culture of responsiveness, collaboration, and client-focused delivery.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Build, mentor, and develop high-performing engineering leaders and project teams.
  • Create leadership development plans and succession strategies across the organization.
  • Foster a culture built around ownership, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Support recruitment, retention, and professional growth initiatives.
  • Lead geographically distributed teams while maintaining strong engagement and performance standards.

Financial Performance

  • Maintain accountability for revenue growth, profitability, utilization, and overall business performance.
  • Support forecasting, workload planning, staffing decisions, and resource allocation.
  • Partner with leadership teams to evaluate growth opportunities and investment priorities.
  • Drive financial discipline across project delivery and operational activities.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline.
  • Significant leadership experience within civil engineering, site development, land development, infrastructure, or multi-site delivery environments.
  • Demonstrated success leading large teams, business units, or national client programs.
  • Strong understanding of civil engineering project delivery, permitting, budgeting, scheduling, and quality management.
  • Proven ability to manage client relationships and drive business growth.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • MBA or advanced business degree.
  • Experience leading geographically dispersed teams across multiple offices.
  • Experience supporting national development programs or multi-site client portfolios.
  • Strong operational and financial management experience.
  • Proven track record of improving business performance and scaling engineering operations.
