Position Summary
The Director of Energy Strategy is responsible for developing and executing comprehensive energy procurement strategies that ensure reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable power delivery across a national data center portfolio. This leader oversees natural gas and utility procurement, supplier relationships, contract negotiations, risk mitigation, and cross-functional alignment. The role also drives innovation in sourcing and supports the company's financial, operational, and environmental goals.

Key Responsibilities
Energy Procurement Strategy

  • Align energy strategies with corporate sustainability and financial targets.
  • Develop and implement national procurement strategies for natural gas and utility services.
  • Drive innovation in sourcing, procurement, and energy efficiency initiatives.
  • Analyze market dynamics, regulatory impacts, and pricing trends to inform long-term strategies.
  • Negotiate complex energy contracts optimized for cost, reliability, and risk reduction.

Natural Gas Procurement & Supplier Management

  • Oversee natural gas infrastructure design, operations, and maintenance aligned with facility needs.
  • Secure reliable supply and competitive pricing through long-term agreements and spot purchases.
  • Manage relationships with natural gas suppliers, utilities, and third-party energy advisors.

Utilities Procurement & Demand Management

  • Lead utility procurement efforts to secure favorable pricing and ensure continuous supply.
  • Implement demand-side strategies such as load balancing, efficiency programs, and peak shaving.
  • Partner with construction and operations teams to optimize utility usage.

Energy Risk Management

  • Forecast and manage risks associated with energy markets, price volatility, and supplier disruptions.
  • Develop risk mitigation frameworks including hedging, flexible contracting, and contingency plans.
  • Continuously refine strategies based on evolving market conditions.

Sustainability & Environmental Compliance

  • Support corporate decarbonization goals through strategic energy sourcing.
  • Evaluate renewable natural gas (RNG), low-carbon fuels, and renewable energy options.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and environmental programs, including emissions reporting.

Analytics & Reporting

  • Track and report on energy consumption, pricing trends, supplier performance, and savings.
  • Provide recurring executive-level updates and insights.
  • Utilize analytics tools to identify opportunities for optimization.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with internal sustainability, engineering, finance, and operations teams.
  • Coordinate with site-level leaders to tailor energy strategies for individual facilities.
  • Work with legal and regulatory teams to anticipate market and legislative impacts.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead and mentor a team of energy procurement professionals.
  • Support development of sourcing strategies, negotiation tactics, and supplier management skills.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Energy, Engineering, Economics, Business, Math, or related field; advanced degrees preferred.
  • 5-10 years of experience in energy markets and procurement, including natural gas, electricity, and large-scale utilities.
  • Demonstrated success negotiating complex energy contracts and managing supplier relationships.
  • Strong understanding of risk management frameworks, utility tariffs, and energy market regulations.
  • Experience with energy management systems (EMS), forecasting tools, and demand-side strategies.
  • Background in renewable energy, RNG, carbon offsetting, or sustainability integration preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and analytical skills.
  • Knowledge of LEED, ISO 50001, CDP, or similar certifications is a plus.
  • Must be eligible for travel and legally authorized to work in the U.S.
