Director of Engineering - Restoration Specialist

Location: Houston, TX

We are seeking a licensed Director of Engineering to lead our Houston, Texas office. This role will be instrumental in building and growing our regional business unit, with direct responsibility for overseeing departmental operations, strengthening client relationships, and providing strategic leadership. The Director will serve as the primary leader for regional growth and project execution, ensuring that work is delivered on time, within budget, and in compliance with contractual obligations, applicable codes, and internal quality standards.

The ideal candidate will bring 10+ years of experience in Civil, Structural, Construction, or Architectural Engineering, along with a proven track record in business development, team leadership, and project delivery. This position offers the opportunity to establish and expand a Texas presence while collaborating closely with executive leadership.

Estimated salary range: $150,000 to $200,000, plus bonus.

Duties & Responsibilities

Essential Functions for All Technical Positions

  • Coordinate and manage internal kick-off, milestone, and closeout meetings for projects, fostering effective communication and collaboration among team members and stakeholders.
  • Verify project schedules and ensure adherence to plans and timelines, both internally and with external resources, to meet project objectives efficiently.
  • Conduct on-site inspections, documenting existing conditions, performing field testing, photographing, and creating hand sketches. Observe and track work in progress to ensure compliance with project specifications.
  • Record accurate field measurements and perform calculations throughout the duration of the project.
  • Prepare written correspondence with clients and contractors, maintaining clear and professional communication throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Understand investigation reports and bid documents, including drawings and technical specifications, to ensure accurate interpretation and implementation.
  • Communicate project status and proactively address any issues or discrepancies that arise. Escalate unresolved issues to the appropriate leadership contact in a timely manner.
  • Maintain organized records, files, drawings, and other essential project data, ensuring they are appropriately stored within internal systems for easy accessibility and future reference.
  • Collect post-project feedback to identify areas for improvement and communicate this feedback to leadership.
  • Stay current with job knowledge and industry trends through participation in educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and engaging in professional societies and networks.
  • Participate in networking activities and represent the organization at events, seminars, and continuing education presentations. Actively seek opportunities to promote the organization's presence in the industry.
  • Perform other duties related to the position as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in contributing to the overall success of the team.

Special Requirements

Technical

  • Provide technical guidance and expertise to the team throughout the design and construction phases.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of relevant regulations, codes, and standards to ensure compliance in design and construction processes.
  • Oversee and assign staff to perform forensic inspections, applying technical expertise to assess project conditions and identify potential issues or deficiencies.
  • Oversee and assign staff to perform a wide range of testing, including but not limited to material testing, structural analysis, and performance evaluations.
  • Assign staff to oversee testing activities and ensure accurate data collection for proper interpretation of results.
  • Oversee and assist in the development and review of technical specifications, drawings, and construction documents.
  • Assign staff to produce comprehensive field reports detailing observations, measurements, and findings from site visits and inspections.
  • Oversee and assist in the preparation of expert reports that provide in-depth analysis, conclusions, and recommendations based on project requirements and findings.
  • Present effectively during mediations and provide expert testimony through depositions, where applicable.

Client Relations

  • Collaborate with legal teams and represent the organization in mediations, providing expert opinions and strategic guidance.
  • Work with cross-functional teams, including clients, contractors, and consultants, to coordinate project activities and resolve technical issues.
  • Conduct project meetings with clients and stakeholders effectively and professionally.
  • Foster and maintain strong client relationships, acting as a trusted advisor and ensuring a high level of client satisfaction.

Internal Team Leadership

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for the department, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives.
  • Lead and manage a diverse team of architects, engineers, and support staff, providing mentorship, guidance, and professional development opportunities.
  • Work closely with team members to understand scope, budget, goals, deliverables, and schedule requirements to ensure project success.
  • Ensure compliance with internal policies, procedures, and applicable industry regulations.
  • Support the team in addressing technical challenges, providing guidance, and facilitating problem-solving.
  • Foster cross-functional collaboration and help achieve broader organizational objectives by working closely with other divisions and departments.
  • Develop and refine processes and procedures to improve quality of work product, increase efficiency, and streamline workflows within the division.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position includes supervisory responsibilities for the department.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in Engineering or Architecture preferred.
  • Master's or Ph.D. in a relevant discipline preferred.

Work Experience

Minimum of 10 years of experience in the architectural and engineering consulting industry.

Licenses & Certifications

  • For degree holders: Engineering/Architectural Intern or Engineer-in-Training certification required.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA) license required.
  • OSHA-10 certification required.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license required, as this position requires travel to and from client sites.

Skills

  • Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to handle multiple projects concurrently.
  • Knowledge of building codes, regulations, and standards.

  • Flexibility to work overtime when required.
  • Familiarity with drafting software such as AutoCAD, BricsCAD, and Revit, where applicable to the role.

  • Ability to work in the field and travel outside local areas as workload and project demands require.
  • Effective time management skills while adhering to project budgets.

Flexibility in Scheduling

Ability to adjust lunch hours and work patterns based on project-specific demands, including working through regular lunch periods when necessary.
