Electrical Design Engineer

Location: Davenport, Iowa

Position Overview

This role is responsible for the design, estimation, and execution of electrical engineering projects, with a focus on industrial and manufacturing environments. The Electrical Design Engineer will collaborate with project teams to develop control concepts, prepare technical proposals, and ensure successful project delivery from concept through commissioning.


Key Responsibilities

  • Design and specify medium-voltage (5kV-35kV) and low-voltage (120V-600V) electrical distribution systems, including substations, switchgear, MCCs, panelboards, transformers, and bus duct systems.
  • Develop power distribution systems for industrial automation, robotics, and manufacturing processes.
  • Create load flow models, single-line diagrams, and schematics using AutoCAD Electrical and SKM PowerTools.
  • Conduct short circuit, arc flash, and coordination studies in accordance with IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E.
  • Design grounding and bonding systems per IEEE 80 and NEC Article 250.
  • Perform calculations for fault current, voltage drop, and feeder/bus ampacity.
  • Provide conduit and cable schedules, voltage drop calculations, and feeder sizing per NEC standards.
  • Integrate power systems with industrial control systems, including PLCs, VFDs, and automation networks.
  • Ensure compliance with NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, and local codes.
  • Coordinate with utility providers for service entrance and metering requirements.
  • Support construction activities, including RFIs, field changes, submittal reviews, and commissioning.
  • Develop commissioning plans and perform functional testing of power systems and protective relays.
  • Participate in project planning, scheduling, and scope management.
  • Collaborate with clients and stakeholders to define project goals and technical requirements.
  • Identify and mitigate design risks to ensure system reliability and safety.
  • Mentor junior engineers and promote a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including specifications, manuals, and as-built drawings.
  • Drive process improvements and stay current with industry trends and technologies.
  • Represent the organization professionally in all client and team interactions.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and internal policies.
  • Provide regular project updates and reports to stakeholders.
  • Travel up to 25% as required.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in power system design and implementation in industrial or manufacturing settings.
  • Proficiency in PLC programming, HMI development, and control hardware.
  • Skilled in AutoCAD Electrical, SKM PowerTools, and vendor-specific programming tools.
  • Strong knowledge of NEC, IEEE, NFPA, and UL standards.
  • Familiarity with OSHA construction safety requirements.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to manage projects and meet deadlines.
  • Strong team collaboration and leadership capabilities.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends as needed.
  • Ability to travel and perform physical tasks associated with field work.

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited institution (or equivalent experience).
  • Willingness to pursue Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, with increasing responsibility preferred.
  • Experience with Arc Flash Risk Analysis is a plus.
